What software needed to play dvd on pc

I have just stuck a dvd-rom in the pc so I can play dvd movies(no porn honest:D )What is the best app/freeware to use,I am doing all the decoding throug the pc

plenty available for linux (xine probably being the best - http://xine.sourceforge.net , don't know any good ones for Windows.

I'd be interested in the answers to this meself actually, since the first thing I did when I got my last rig was wipe the drive and reinstall, forgetting in my enthusiasm that it was second-hand and I didn't have any CD's for the software that came bundled with the DVD and CD-RW drives.

Oddly enough, that was well over a year ago, and I didn't get my first DVD's until Chwistmas. So I went looking and all I could find was rather expensive things like PowerDVD and WinDVD.

That was a rather pointless post, wasn't it?

If you find the asking price for PowerDVD XP 4.0 (between €52.95 and €78.95 depending on your version - which isn't mad expensive in fairness) too high, you could always spend $14.95 to get PowerDVD SE plugin for Windows Media Player 9

If you have an nvidia graphics card, NVDVD is rather good in my opinion. Not free though. A 14 day trial version is available at http://www.nvidia.com/view.asp?PAGE=nvdvd_downloadtrial .

To enable DVD Player in Windows Media Player:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\MediaPlayer\Player\Settings. Value Name: EnableDVDUI, Data Type: REG_SZ (String Value), Value Data: yes or no. Create a new string value called "EnableDVDUI" and set it to "yes" to enable DVD functionality.

I happened to be in Limerick's PCWorld yesterday - PowerDVD was going for a good bit cheaper than that (surprisingly). Full version 4, not the plugin. Can't remember how much it was but I'll hazard a guess of about 30 notes.

you could try http://www.remoteselector.com/ if you want a regionless decoder.

theres a 14 day tral download, €20 to register.

But i cant find any dvd lying around.. so i haven't tried it yet!

This changes the region and dissables macrovision, its not a player it only launches the player through its interface. Its mainly designed for hardware decoder cards, so unless thats changed in newer versions...

AS for a good free one.. try zoom player, its free unless you want to donate some money i think.. plays all media and is great for dvd's and changing aspect ratio etc...
