take a plane trip to the states, buy all your stuff, build it yourself and probably save approx 30% not to mention using two "real" processors!

4got to mention you could also have a choice with your OS. Plan9, Linux, 2k ahh the options are endless :)

5 Years and it'll start to look old and obsolete :)

2 scuzzy drives going at full speed 24/7, grand if you're living near an airport.

hope you dont want to play games on on that PJ

What motherboard did you get PJ?

Some mobos can support up to 3gigs of ram why go with only 1.5 gigs if you're going for no limits :).

interestingly, i couldnt find any 10k drives of that capacity @u360

    did find an 18Gb 15k U160 for 70 odd dollars. yum :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,949 ✭✭✭SouperComputer

also, i have to say I have two 10k U160 cheetahs in my system and they are remarkably quiet.....almost silent!!!!! Very impressed :)

the're running in SE mode (40Mb) and without RAID gave a becnhmark better that ata66 RAID!

SCSI is king man :) Espcially free SCSI!

and the moral of the story is? ... don't post in technology until you know what thermal compound, molex, northbridge, fsb, L1 Cache, solder,CAS, BGA RAM, and platter is ;)

enlighten me on bga (Ball Grid Array) ram. sounds expensive!

So you get three or five 72GB drives. You'll get much better straight-line speed out of two smaller 10kRPM disks than one larger one, and of course faster again with 15k.

not with a decent drive IMO

i think the big drive-small drive theory is out of date in relation to the change in thoughput. RPM and cache I has a much bigger influence. than capacity. unless the drive is just plain older tech

You misunderstand. There are two issues here.

    1) Two small disks are faster than one big one. With current hard disk technology, drives from the same generation tend to be roughly the same speed. All else equal, a larger disk may win a little on areal density which could make it a bit faster. But if you can read 50MBytes/sec from each of two disks at the same time, that's still going to be faster than one larger disk that can alone do 60MBytes/sec.

    2) The original suggestion to use smaller disks springs from the fact that the large disks in the quoted specification are "only" 10kRPM and no drives in that capacity range seem to spin faster. However disks half the size at 15kRPM are available. But even if they were 10kRPM you'll still get more out of the two half size drives (including more noise if that's an concern) than from the single large disk. You lose less capacity to redundancy when you switch on RAID5 too.

so basically your talking about RAID. i was comparing two drives in a standard config

but now i know wot ur talking bout. lota people judge speed by capacity, but what can ye do eh :rockband:

Ahh for 3D design work, and rotating, panning, zooming of objects.

Spend €11,000 and not have RAID? That's worse than having only one CPU! :D

As I said this was just some idle time spent on the dell site.

If I was spending 11 grand I'd be spending it on :

    Monitor size

    Graphics handeling

    HD Speed

    Memory

    Oh and one of these
    > Yep

    Regards
    PJ

You could always Use Fiber channel Drives get your self a 2GB HBA and 73GB 15K drives at about 800mb/s performance both directions niceeeeeeeeee

if your getting involved with RAID ...which you should
using a mirror gives you excellent read times and slightly slower write times plus it offers the highest redundancy

I noticed on the dell quote talk of a USB key ring..thats laughable
LTO2 which offers 200-400 GB and up to 60mb/s transfer rate

Fujitsu have fairly cheep FC drives....I would love too hear about someone that uses FC in their PC or Server for that matter.

only ever seen FC in a SAN or hugh RAID array
