Escort GTi help

Can anyone tell me something about ford escorts please? Does the GTi come in a 1.6L engine. Cause theres a chap I know called Darren Colgan. I think thats his name. Anyway he claims his car is a GTi. But to my knowledge they only came in a 1.8L. Can anyone please tell me if there is a 1.6 one available. He is always driving round tallaght in his blue one with cossie spoiler and Im convinced he is a liar. Cheers.....Amy

The XR3i came as a 1.6L and the GTI came with a 1.8L Zetec DOHC 16V engine developing 115 bhp.

The Escort GTI was first produced in April '97 as a replacement for the XR3i.

So if its pre '97 it's the XR3i rebadged to a GTi ... :rolleyes:

The Escort GTi was a cynical badge-engineering exercise. It was just a 1.8 Escort with a spoiler and alloys, and some extra kit inside. I think it was introduced later than '97, but can't be certain.

The Mk 4/5 XR3 was a 1.8 iirc. The Mk 3 XR3 was a 1.6. A bit of googling will dig up information aplenty on these cars anyway.

The only decent sporting Mk 4 Escorts were the RS2000 and RS Cosworth. And the Mk 5 RS2000 and RS2000 4x4 were good too.

Going slightly off-topic, the Focus RS Cosworth, due in 2005, should be a cracker

Thanx, His escort is a 1998' 1.6 GTi but im sure its an si and he bought those GTi badges and stuck them on!
