    Somebody explain this...

You form a shaky coalition government nearly three years ago. And in that time the security of your nation worsens, your economy collapses, your relationship with neighbouring countries and the world is as bad as ever, and you yourself are at the centre of a corruptions scandal. Then in yesterdays General Election your party wins nearly twice as more seats, winning your the Election.

    How can this happen?

I persume it is Israel you are talking about.

Security won. If your cities were being bombed by suicide bombers you'd vote for security.

    Could you imagine numerous Omaghs??

Yeah Cork he has really stopped all the suicide bombers under his first term. What a security victory that was

    Gandalf.

No amount of Omaghs would make me vote for Ian Paisley (who's probably the closest thing this island has to Sharon).

For the same reason Fianna Fail won. Nobody wants to rock the boat.

Labour totally imploded... the lowest number of Knesset seats in its party history.

The Labour election campaign was marred by political infighting and backstabbing and totally failed to get its message across.
Both the resigning Party leader Benjamin Ben-Eliezer and new incumbent Mitzna refused prior to the election result to enter into a new Coalition government with Sharon.Effectively conceeding the election before it had even began.

Sharrons cause was further boosted by the main Palestinian Groups failiure/refusal to declare a ceasefire at the conclusion of the Cario Conference on the Eve of the General election.
With no prospect of a resumption of the peace process, the majority of the pro-peace parties lost ground to the more hawkish parties.

On a more positive note the main benefactor from the labour meltdown was the gains made by the Shinui party who are a seccular party of the left, who oppose amongst other things the concessions made to the Orthodox Far-Right in the occupied
    territories.
Shinui not only made gains amongst young voters they also managed to secure an important mandate amongst the newer demographic from the former Soviet republics.Who were believed prior to the election to be natural supporters of Shas,Likud and Meretz

Shinui campaigned along the lines that whilst new emegries were required to undertake Military duties in the occupied territories Ultra orthadox jews were exempt from Conscription.
Shinui have offered to enter a coalition and might be able to use their influence to put a check on the excesses of Shas.

Commentators beleive Sharron requires some central representation either from Labour or Shinui in order to persuade the US Congress to approve some 12 billon dollars of Aid to ease the ecconomic burden of the continued intafada.
At present Sharon is trying to woo Shimon Peres and his supporters from the Labour camp in opposition which would effectively split the party.

I'm curious as to whether or not these people are discussing the same nation.

If they are, then I'm also curious as to whether or not Cork actually read beyond PH01's first sentence.

bonkey, I think what Cork was trying to allude to was the blitz / siege mentality similar to "if you are not with us, you are against us", where opinions are in the extremes. It is where the opposition parties are equated to "enemies".

That said, didn't Labour win in the UK in 1946 (or was it 1945) and the Democrats in the USA in 1992.

Yes but in both instances it was at the End of a war not during it.
