Question about sound quality from video

    I've got a wide screen Sony TV and a Sony video hooked up via scart.
    When I'm watching video playback the sound volume and quality are significantly reduced.
    Any ideas what could be causing this, i.e. could it be my cheap scart cable.
    I realise I'm short on details here but thought there may be an obvious cause/solution that some of you guys have seen before.
