... the Humour Board's new Moderator, BioHazRd.

Between us, we should be able to tend to the bigger flock that the Humour Board has gathered in recent months.

He'll be just as willing as me to ban people, so don't think there'll be a good cop, bad cop - it'll be BMFH (Bast Mod From Hell) and BMFH.

    That is all.

    Should the charter be updated?

    Something along the lines of:

Jokes which make fun of the deaths of innocent people, particularly those currently in the news (such as the Columbia disaster, Feb '02) will not be tolerated.

    Just a thought.

Oh - and welcome BioHazRd :) Happy modding!

Sticky all the non acceptable topics.........it would be a help so we know what is humour and what is humour

It would'nt be easy or practical to sticky all non acceptable topics - there are always new topics every day or so that may be deemed unacceptable. However we do hope posters will use a small amount of common sense when posting - If it is not going to be work safe, child safe, or offensive to anyone, don't post it.
If we see something that falls into these categories, we will snip it and pm the poster to tell them why. If it is serious enough, the poster will earn a nice shiny ban.

Other than that, keep reading the charter, it may change slightly from time to time.

    Agreed.

Mods should make a rule to tell people to put a warning in the title of potentially offensive jokes and leave it at that.

btw i'd be interested to know how many people on boards.ie actually knew those astronauts?

ballooba, that doesn't matter. it's still offensive.

making jokes about people being killed is NOT funny.

as graham norton found out after what he said about maurice gibb.

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,621 ✭✭✭Panda

norton was a tit to say that.

    welcome BioHazRd.

on that other point if we've had dead baby jokes, how can you say no to nasa ones?
no offence but it sounds hypocritical.

Don't know what you mean Panda

    From the charter:

The following are considered "no go" areas for your postings here to the Humour Board...

    Pornography
    Dead Baby Jokes
    Racist Jokes
Links to Mature Content or Rotten websites
    etc...

they may have been posted in the past, but not any more

    This is ridiculous (imo)...
Jokes like this were tolerated before. Just because this type of humour is not to your taste does not mean that it is 'not funny'.

While it may not be politically correct, it is not illegal to tell jokes about dead astronauts or babies.

If boards.ie is to be a true 'bulletin and community boards' (look at the logo at the top left of your screen) then you have to allow members of this community some input into how it is run.

I agree, it is not illegal, even though it may be in bad taste. However, as boards IS a community, we have to make sure we are sensitive to the desires of all members. These may include devout Christians (or other religious groups) who may take extreme offence at these type of jokes. They may also include people who have just gone through the trauma of an infant death in their family - do you really think they would appreciate seeing a dead baby joke ? - I didn't think so.

As regards members of the community having a say in how the site is run - check the feedback thread, I think that will answer your point. I was a simple poster on boards up till recently - now I'm a moderator. I haven't changed, nor do I intend to, I am still a member of the overall community.

Boards really is a place where open discussion is encouraged - posting offensive jokes does not constitute a discussion in my book.

If it means that jokes need to be accessable to the lowest common denominator, then so be it.
