    From tonight's Evening Echo:

'TV COMPANY'S £7.5M CHARGE SHOT DOWN, DAIL BODY TOLD'

The office of the director or Telecommunications Regulation has shot down a move which would have netted Chorus, formerly Cork Multi-Channel, £7.5 million.
The company had intended to introduce a £2.50 monthly service charge for its 250,000 customers, but has been told not to do so by the director.
Now customers must wait to see if they face a £45 bill for each call-out they make to the company.
The information outlawing the charge was conveyed to the joint committee on Public Enterprise and Transport.
Ed McGowan, executive assistant at the OTDR, told the joint committee on Public Enterprise and transport that Etain Doyle had found the charge to be outside existing regulations.
"A condition of the cable and MMDS licenses issued by the director is that for the basic programme package must receive the prior approval of the director. When Chorus proposed the £2.50 monthly charge it appeared to the director that such a charge would constitute an increase in such prices. And in the bsence of consent would amount to a breach of the relevant licenses", hesaid.
A spokesman for Chorus was not available for comment today.
Deputy Noel O'Flynn, a member of the Dail committee said: "I totally disagree with this service and call-out fee. In particular, as monthly charges are imposed for the service they provide. This particular charge gave offence to thousands of subscribers to Chorus. This was something the people of Cork and Limerick were absolutely outraged by".

If all of Chorus's 250,000 customers paid the monthly charge, it would increase the company's annual revenue by approximately £7.5 million.
If Chorus had failed to comply with the wishes of the OTDR, a number of sanctions could have been applied against them. These included revoking, suspending or amending the license or reducing the geographic license area in which the company operates.
