Some nice choices in there, but I think, to be fair, you'd have to add Alan Shearer and of course Maradona, even though he wasn't always an out and out striker.

    Van Basten
    Nordahl
    Rush
    Klinnsman
    Shearer
    Hunt
    Meazza
    Henry

...can't think of rest right now.

Peoples choices are sure to be influenced by teams/leagues they follow though.

Marco Van Basten was the best ever.

He should be in everyone's list imho.

Plagued with injury near the end of his career unfortunatly :(

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,972 ✭✭✭SheroN

I can't believe someone included david beckham and not alan shearer in their choice of top 10 strikers??....Actually, I can't believe the lack of Alan Shearer in most people's choices.

Van Nistelrooy does not belong on that list - I hope you were just taking the piss. All he is is a bloody goal poacher but nobody seems to notice.

Ian Wright anyway and a couple of others such as Robbie Fowler(remember a few years ago), definitely Alan Shearer and Eric Cantona(just for the collar and the Crystal Palace game!)

Its to hard to make a proper list but here is a list of some the best and not necessary the best

Van Basten (oh am I proud to be dutch for this man)
    Pele
Maradona(maybe not a striker but still magical)
    Batistuta
    Di Stefano
Cruyff(Johan not his son cause he was just useless)
Romario(without doubt he was one of the best brazilians after Pele close to follow is Ronaldo though)
Ruud Gullit(had to include him because he is dutch)
Henry(he is going to be big aswell as Zidane)

ok and now I have to put this man in even though I dont like him but still he did good for his country.

    Klinsman

I could think of many more great strikers but I am leaving it at this.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,802 ✭✭✭thegills

JPP - anyone who can score with a backheel from 18 yards should make the list.

What about the Saudi Arabian striker with 200+ caps and 1500+ goals??

Rush is without doubt one of the best and should always appear above Cantona and Van Kneesalright purely on statistics alone, its not as if either one has done well internationally!

Raul, Maradona, Puskas, Matthews, Zico, Pele, Van Basten, Rush, Boniek, Rossi.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,553 ✭✭✭✭Dempsey

Glad to see Garrincha on some people's lists, he is abit of a forgotten hero, he could turn a game around in the blink of an eye.

that saudi Arabian player wouldn't get on my list because he probably scored most of them against poor opposition although scoring 1500+ goals is not an easy task. How many of them were against world class opposition.

Pele scored over 1000 against the best of opposition, great striker but my favourite player would be maradona followed closely by Marco van Basten. Marco would be higher up on everyone's lists only for his career ending injury, me thinks.

I dont have a list done yet, still thinking about it.

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,164 ✭✭✭Space Coyote

Maradona (i'm saying he was a striker)
Van Basten (my fave of all time)
    Cruyff, Johann
    Baggio,Robbie (he was a genius)
    Batistuta
    Puskas
    Rush
    Romario
    Weah
Brian Clough (if you've read his autobiography you'll know how many goals he got, phenomenal)

that list is a very rough draft, ye could spend weeks thinking of lads...

P.S. I left out Pelé coz of those Viagra ads he's doing...christ !

    Klinsmann
    Best
    Dixie Dean

    Here’s ten in reverse order

10 George Camsell (my bid to outdo Pigman for the Golden Anorak award) any one who can score 59 league goals in a single season has got to be a serious contender

9 Dixie Dean Anyone who can score 60 league goals in a single season is an even more serious contender

8 Ronaldo The first World Cup golden boot winner to end up with a tally of more than six goals in 32 years (that’s surely the Golden Anorak safe). Not as good to watch as some of the others though, IMHO.

7 Dennis Law By way of complete contrast, superb to watch but never won anything internationally. (Scottish, poor chap) Even missed out on United’s moment of European glory in 1968. Place was taken by some teenager called Kidd who scored on the night.

6 Paolo Rossi Even better in 1978 than he was in 1982.

5 Dennis Bergkamp Unbelievable first touch. As good as Cruyff, who is only omitted from this list for not being primarily a striker. Ditto Platini.

4 Gerd Muller Goalscoring machine. How he managed to swing those massive thighs was a mystery of nature.

3 Eusebio Big and strong like Van Nistlerooy but for skill and shooting power left him in the ha’penny place. Hardest shot I’ve ever seen. ‘Oh my word. Have you ever seen anything like that?’

2 Van Basten Elegant, skillful, deadlly finisher. Gets ahead of Bergkamp by actually winning something internationally.

1 Pele Simply the best. At everything. Ever. Pace. Skill. Balletic grace. Cheek. Most memorable moments are all misses (chip from halfway, header saved by Banks, dummy around Uruguayan keeper in 1970 World Cup) and yet he still scored over 1,000 goals.

Robbie Fowler <in his early days>

    Englands most natural striker

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 388 ✭✭da_deadman

    No particular order:

    Marco Van Basten
    Gabriel Batistuta
    Pele
    Ferenc Puskas
    Diego Maradona
    Roberto Baggio
    Alan Shearer
    Gerd Muller

the last two could come from a few others like Romario, Edmundo(such a talented player), Jurgen Klinnsman, Dixie Dean, Stanley Matthews, Paolo Rossi and maybe Dennis Bergkamp. In the near future the likes of Totti, Del Piero, Vieri, Henry, Ronaldo and Van Nistelrooy could be considered

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,392 ✭✭✭jonno

I'll go with Fowler when he started off. Then there's Ian Rush, Pele, Batistuta, Lineker, Maradona and of coarse Van Basten.

Have to say though my all time favourite is Rushie. Pity about the dodgy moustaush
