Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Today's Daily Star apparently says that Roy Keane has confirmed he will return to the Republic of Ireland squad in time to be available for their next Euro 2004 qualifying match.

    Sin é.

    Good man!

I know we probably won't qualify for Portugal, so it might only be for 4 matches. Then he can go out with his head held high.

Waste of time if he is not gonna compete in the Finals.

I'm doubtful myself until I see HIM saying it in an interview.

Didn't hear that about the finals... would seriously doubt it. What I've heard is that he will only play in competitive matches and not friendlies.

Class... at least I hope he's back... He'll get us to Portugal don't worry.

Unfortunately I think that it will take a bit more than a player that has seen better days, even if he is the best we have by far, to get us to the finals.

"Keane will not be available for friendlies and will retire for good from international soccer at the end of the qualifying series."

thats horrible, even if we qualify, we'll be once again left without our best player in a major tournaments finals.

    How do you figure that?

What if they mean, until qualifying to win the European Championships?

I'm sure they mean what they say: "until the end of the qualifying series", which means that he'd retire then whether we qualify or not. I'd doubt, based on our results up until now in the competition, that he expects that we WILL qualify.

Maybe he'd re-assess his situation if we do qualify... who knows? If he does ANY playing for Ireland at all, it's a bonus. In fairness, he was going to retire after the World Cup anyway... you can't expect the guy to go on forever

You should probably wait until you get a more reputable source than The Daily Star.

When Kerr/Keane comes out and says it, then I'll believe it. I'll hold off on my ripping of Keane untill then! ;)

The Herald reports that he will play for the qualifiers, not the friendly games. But claims that he WILL play in the Euro finals, should Ireland qualify. Also, to clarify, Keane never said he'd return. There is still no quote from Keane saying "I will play". It's still all speculation until the man says it.

Yet another reason as to not pay any attention to such high quality tabloids as The Star.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,912 ✭✭✭Washout

hear hear.....and i bet they arent even embarassed for printing that story!....it sold them plenty of papers.. muppets are all the tabloids are.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,309 ✭✭✭✭Bard

Well according to Brian Kerr the story was technically true at the time in that Roy Keane has given him an "unequivocal assurance" that he WOULD return to the international team a mere 24 hours before he rang him with a change of heart saying he was retiring.
