How to use your phone without ringing up big bill

    Monday, 10th February, 2003
THE STATE body charged with licensing and regulating the electronic communications industry is to start telling the public how to get the best value from their mobile and landline phones.

ComReg is to distribute the leaflet next week to libraries and citizens' advice bureaus to inform people of savings they can make with the right choices in the increasingly competitive phone market. The leaflet will be distributed free of charge, with the promise of similar information campaigns in the future.

"Because of competition there's choice," spokeswoman Deirdre Healy said. "We have a consumer's forum and want to message people that the choice is out there. We did a big report last year on roaming charges but not everybody got to see it. We're going to do a number of more leaflets about all sections of the telecommunications industry."

The leaflet advises people to check their landline usage before signing up for a particular company, and advises on how to change service providers. It also gives a list of useful service providers with internet and contact phone numbers available.

Users are also told how to control the cost of using mobile phones abroad and to contact their service provider to check the cost of roaming charges.
