    Lou Reed - The Kids

The song ends with the sound of children crying and screaming for their mother. The rumour is that the producer told his own kids that their mother had died to get the sounds.

I never think of Floyds songs as sad, rather they're wistful or elegiac which is slighly different.

There is a version of this going around the net supposedly by the Smashing Pumpkins, but its actually just the Edge on guitar and vocals. Check out the Popmart video and you'll realise the similarity.

The Bed by Lou Reed, actually most of Berlin.
Seasons in the sun by Terry Jacks too I guess, although I think that's more a miserable song than sad.

An acoustic guitar piece called "Fly Like A Mountain Bird" from a soundtrack to a Japanese series called BeachBoy is probably the saddest instrumental song Ive ever heard... definitely one to download if you can find it.

As far as REM goes, Nightswimming is a lot sadder than Everybody Hurts imo.

In terms of Floyd, theres a live version (performed just before the release of Meddle) of Fat Old Sun I came across a long time ago, which while not a sad song, was sung in such a way that it was.. must root it out somewhere.

some others that spring to mind..
    Spiritualized - Broken Heart
Roger Waters - Every Strangers Eyes
    Kila - Sean E
Yo La Tengo - Tears Are In Your Eyes
Beth Gibbons - Funny Time Of Year
    Low - Laser Beam
    Lamb - Gabriel
    Piano Magic - No Closure

Leonard Cohen's old stuff, reminds me of a cold neon lit tram on a dark lonely night in Prague watching the couples sitting together, in peaceful solitude.

Famous Blue Raincoat would be a particular favourite.

Nick Drake, Pink Moon (the whole album). Look him up, a tragic fellow. Died 2 years later of accidental drug overdose (mistook his anti-depressants for sleeping tablets). He wasn't far off doing it himself though, Alanis would have called it Ironic.

    fun!

The Verve's 'a northern soul' album is mostly really sad. The songs 'drive you home' and 'history' are two consecutive tracks that are particularly sad.

theme to the deerhunter >The Shadows

It's called Cavatina and it's by John Williams. If you've only heard the shadows version check out Williams version.. excellent.

I'd vote for fields of gold sting/Eva Cassidy. I think eva Cassidy's version is probably sadder due to the cancer add on TV... very sad. Queen's who wants to live forever,

Mal Pope - Please Don't Go
Eric Clapton - Tears in Heaven
    Phil Collins - Separate Lives
