Eric Clapton - Tears In Heaven
    Julian Lennon - Saltwater
Paddy Casey - It's Over Now

    and (well, I think anyway)

Barbers Adagio For Strings (Not sure if that's the correct title) but you know the one from the end of Platoon and was re-mixed for the Kevin and Perry film (once again not sure, I could be wrong?)

I think a really underrated track is:
Embrace - My Weakness is none of your business
Maybe it's just me or something but it hits every time I hear it...

    Others would be:

    Radiohead - Fake Plastic Trees
    The Frames - Red Chord
    Embrace - Drawn From Memory
    Alice In Chains - Nutshell

I was going to take bubblesup on this but since you went even further, i quoted you.. How is comfortably numb even remotely sad? It's one of the most peaceful and mellow songs i've ever heard, not a hint of sadness in it. Perhaps, at the beginning, there's an air of mystery about it, but that's as far as it goes.

I'm even more confused to see a mention of "dock of the bay" by otis redding (how the hell is that sad? especially with the whistling throughout, it's one of the happiest, most chilled out and content songs ever) and "Imagine" by John Lennon.
    Imagine there's no countries,
    It isnt hard to do,
Nothing to kill or die for,
    No religion too,
    Imagine all the people
    living life in peace...

    Oh yea. Terribly depressing stuff.

Perhaps people find these songs sad due to personal connoctations of the songs, but i don't think you can bring that sort of thing into a thread the title of which is "Saddest song ever?"..

Anyways, I'd nominate The Beatles - Because.

    Mazzy Star - Halah
Elvis Costello - Shipbuilding + I Want You
Beach Boys - Til I Die

Oh and I think that Nick Drake overdosed deliberately from what I've read.

Here's one more song that I can't believe I left out:

Bonny 'Prince' Billy - I See a Darkness
(His solo version or the one Johnny Cash sang- they're both absolutely brilliant and wonderfully sad)

It has to be the saddist song ever. It's about two lovers that never really get it on, and when they do she gets mowed down by a truck:('
