don't know if it's been mentioned yet, but...

Radiohead's Motion Picture Soundtrack - last song on Kid A
Bloody dismal - in a good sense, very very moving song, built for funerals.

....edited bit....

I don't see how Fake Plastic Trees is sad, TBH.

Queen's These Are The Days Of Our Lives
- definitely!! The fact that it was Freddie Mercury's last video makes it all the more poignant.

OOH! I think everything on 'and she closed her eyes' is heartbreaking, especially 'so this is goodbye' and 'little star'....

You can get the Gary Jules version of "Mad World" on the latest "Acoustic" album "Acoustic 3" it's called and it's a double CD with quite a lot cool tunes on it. Worth checking out.

Just to be different:

Wendy Matthews - The Day You Went Away

A very popular Australian artist who's never had a sniff of fame outside Oz, which is a shame because she's very good.

But that particular track has to get the medal for saddest song ever.

you'd have to find the tune yourself, but the lyrics are HERE if you want to get an idea of exactly how sad it really is.

you do need to listen to her singing it though. Nearest comparison I can think of is Eva Cassidy, although she was big in Australia before the late great Eva ever hit the big time in the US.

Sample lyrics for those too lazy to check out the page or get the album ('The Day You Went Away' is from the Album 'Lily').

Hey, does it ever make you wonder
what's on my mind
I was only ever running back to your side
I never cried, I just watched my life go by
It's just a pack of lies,
'cause you're leaving me behind
Why, after this long is there nothing
I'll keep, oh, I can shout
you'll pretend you're falling asleep
I live a lie, yeah, believing that you're mine
It's just a waste of time
'cause you're leaving me behind

Hey, there's not a cloud in the sky
It's as blue as your goodbye
and I thought it would rain
on a day like today
Hey, there's not a cloud in sight
it's as blue as your blue goodbye
and I thought it would rain
the day you went away

Oh, and then there's the end theme tune from the older Lassie episodes.

Albinoni's Adagio for Strings in G minor.

The only song to nearly have me sobbing like a baby almost every time.

have to agree with lemming.

wasn't that Barber though? or am I thinking of another one?

the one they used for the quiet bits in Platoon.

No, that's the Barber Adagio (in D Minor iirc) for strings (and a total cvnt to play I might add .... )

Albinoni's Adagio is the one used in Rollerball (the original feat. James Caan)

'for no-one'.. a beatles song.... just always gets that soft squishy spot in me!!!

'and in her eyes you see nothing, no sign of love behind the tears. cryed for no-one, a love that should have lasted years' :(

All good choices. Mine would be Hallelujah/i know its over from the mystery white boy tour album by Jeff Buckley. Mad world form the donnie darko soundtrack, Amsterdam and Trouble by coldplay, the Blowers daughter by Damien rice and exit music for a film by radiohead.

The Frames - The Blood
The Frames - Neath the beeches..
Pumpkins - To Forgive
Clapton - Tears in Heaven
Jeff Buckley - Halellujah & Last Goodbye
Damien Rice - older cheats
Counting Crows - colourblind
Coldplay - The Scientist
Zwan - Of a Broken Heart

the smiths-last night i dreamt that somebody loved me its sad in a pathetic kind of way.

hmmm
*gets out the new trusty smiths book to find out what this song is actually about*
i'll have to get back to u on this one, readers ;)
it sounds sad tho.

also-begging bowl by cathal coughlan. about just after the end of a relationship i think, in that stage u get where u miss the person uncontrollably.

fiona apple-love ridden

where u love ur ex, but they dont love u back
also i know, which is comforting, but vaguely pathetic too.

and tori amos-precious things. its just sounds sad.
