DivX files encoded in the illegal version 3.x don't work with the 5.0.x codec, you'll have to find the version 3 codec and install 5.0.x over it. anyone know where?

Have you tried the Xvid codec (Open source MPEG 4 codec). If these DivX backups were encoded using Xvid then this codec will be needed to get them working.

    ...have you tried GSpot ?

Problem is there are so many versions of the different codecs.
Grab all the xvid ones you can (I have 3 different versions).

Goto www.doom9.org - check out his download section it has all the codecs and install them all - that will cover it and any others that you go to play.

Download the tsunami filter pack (audio codecs for Divx)

Try using the videolan client to play it (it seems to play anything!); http://www.videolan.org/vlc/download-windows.html .
