I got i-Stream installed last Monday. For the last two evenings, I get an Icon on my taskbar telling me that my Local Area Network is unplugged ever 3 minutes. This is where eircom have installed their ADSL Modem which is an: Alcatel SpeedTouch(tm) USB ADSL RFC1483. The green ADSL light Flashes on and off for 30 - 60 seconds while the connection is down. Anyone else having this problem? Also. Is there an e-mail address for Eircom I-Stream? I'm in Galway.

    Thanks all
    Darren

irishdeej, freephone 1800 460260 . Their support is top notch. As far as I know, it's 24/7.

their support is only 8 to 12 i think it is not 24/7 anyway. Do you know what drivers you are using for the modem? There may be updated drivers on speedtouchdsl.com you may want to try them. The alcatel USB modems are generaly crap and trying to get correct driver is a pain in the ass, and they have a habbit of dropping connections on some of the modems

    A couple of suggestions:

What operating system you got on your PC? If win98, downlaod and install Dial-up-networking version 1.4 from our friends at microsoft.com for a start.
Is it a branded PC or a DIY jobbie - there may be USB powering issues with some chipsets/motherboards which may not be helping... Unplug any other USB devices (esp USB-powered ones like may scanners) and see if that helps too...

There is a new version of the drivers available from Thomson - you may have to "register" first, but the download's at:
    http://www.speedtouch.com/dvrdownloadusb.htm
I got there via http://www.speedtouch.com/support.htm in case direct link doesn't work.

The problem is almost 90% certain to be Eircoms software.

Are you using the software that eircom gave you to connect?

If you are, bin it immediatly and install RASPPPOE . No installer, but its not too hard to set up.

Its x100000 better than the eircom enternet thing.

I have never had any problems with the drivers for the alcatel modem but i have had loads with the software from eircom.

When i 1st got the USB modem and DSL i tried the eircom cd and quickly binned it and set up new connection in XP using its basic PPPOE software.

My 1700XP CPU and IE6 didnt meet the minumum requirements of IE5.5 and Intel 300mHZ CPU.

The USB modems kill the CPU and if i had cash i would get an ethernet modem, so for now im using a 2nd PC as the net con /firewall/gateway and my own pc connects tru that one.

But that flashing thing may mean that your DSL is incorrectly jumpered at the exchange ,ring the number listed above they are really good tech support people and will help you.

If it was a jumpering problem it probably wouldn't work at all.

Doubt it. More a modem and/or driver thing. It'd do no harm installing RASPPPoE anyway, it's alot better than Enternet imo.

Those USB modems are more hassle than they're worth, get yourself a cheap router or an Ethernet modem instead.

It's not some sort of "idle timeout" setting? I had that problem when I first set this link up (also to the Shantalla exchange, BTW, but using an Ethernet ADSL modem) - the connection would cut out after a few minutes idle time. Having said that, it was Smoothwall that was cutting me off, not the modem itself.
