I'd appreciate hearing from anyone who has dialled in to tinet, indigo, iol using ISDN.

I'm wondering if they have a special username and/or password for isdn access, or can _any_ user account dial in via isdn.

    (it's quake related)

I would also like to know which is the fastest way to connect with
    128 k ISDN ???

As far as I know IOL only allow 1 channel ..ie 64k - but have
been told that 128k is possible if you play with settings
    ( anyone know the trick ? )

The one I use is Oceanfree the 1890 923204 - or used to
before it went to this 1890 number - was good - now is sht
keeps going from ping 70 to 666 - evil aint it..

    Unison is stable but SLOOOOOW

Have heard if you ring to a main hub ( kildare ) you get
a better connection - not tested.

( btw I am in Connemara so fked to start with - do I used
enjoy a sub 100 ping in UK/EU before Ocean did something
to their hunting numbers ..:( )

got eircom to install 64k ISDN
    connecting via Oceanfree

    minimal lag spikes

    pinging 50-80 to Irish|UK servers.
90-110 to furthur flung european servers

    these pings relate to CS

id get it, but watch out for the distance to your local exchange. AND,buy the ISDN modem at komplett, the asus pci model for bout 40 euro.

    eircom modems = ripoff tbh

you can dial in to eircom/utvs "free" servers "ie the ones where you're paying for the call. at 128k.

same number, user and pass as a regular dial up account.

dunno about any of the other isps

Indigo is in my opioion, the best ISDN isp in Ireland. If my netsource dsl hasnt sorted itself out by end of contract time, then I'm back on isdn and getting flat rate from indigo/eircom.

My company has a 1891 account with indigo, so I just setup 2 dial up accounts for 64k each, dial each one individually and we're in business @ 128k. Pings with Indigo are excellent. I used to get sub 45 pings to Barrysworld, 50pings to Jolt (with Asus internal Modem). When the server was full, my ping would go upto about 70 -120 average, no spikes

    definatly recommend them

ok just found these - not checked btw

( am guessing the DNS is important )

Seems like Indigo is a Dublin Number only :(

    Not correct.

Indigo Subscription is 1891110110, from anywhere

Indigo GoFree is a local pop (no 1892 number) Go to www.indigo.ie, click on tech support and you will see a drop down list of local access numbers. Not sure if GoFree was ever enabled for either 64K or 128K ISDN.

Indigo ISDN performance on the subscription service is probably better than Eircom.net, mainly I guess because its no longer making any effort to sign up new users and therefore there is less demand/usage/contention.

For a free service, the eircom.net one works well and allows access at either 64K or 128K. Obviously on 128K you are paying for tewo concurrent phone calls = double the bill.

AFAIK there is no clear statement from many of the ISPs on either 64K or 128K ISDN being supported for flat rate. SO don't assume that you will have flat rate ISDN. They COULD limit it to 56K.

OR you could go to this trusted UK site and pick up a nice Eicon Diva PCI modem for 12.50 which imo is a steal :)

sapphire-systems.co.uk i fink, other wise google em on .co.uk go to mail order on the main site ;)

btw, DO not get an external modem, my ping in dos to Irish servers was 100+with one, with the eicon PCI that changed to 13...course I always had a v.nice line and ping.

Eircom prices for it are pretty steep, go get yourself some dsl. But indigo were very stable and gave excellent pings for me

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 53 ✭✭Pug {erZ}

Eircom net is €350 for 128 isdn - business account
esat is about the same price
Unison is €150 for 1 year and have a 128k
but I tested it and is is very poor line.
    ( and I know about sat link - €€€€€€€ )

Best speed atm is Oceanfree 1890923204 but cost
me €180 on my last phone bill :(

& Pls STOP telling me to get DSl,etc - Do you really think
there is a single sane person who would pick ISDN
over DSL for Q3 - Connemara is not going DSL anytime
in the next 12 months confirmed by eircom :( - even do
there is a FO cable loop which cost over 2million put down
Typical eircom ran out of funds to finish its setup

Need to get my pay account with IOL setup for
that 1 cent a min 1891 nbr. Tech told me if he
was sitting at my PC he could setup both channels
in 2 min - BUT - cant tell me how to do it :( ffs

[ Anyone heard about UTV (?) doing a fixed line charge
    for internet access in Ireland ? - 56k/isdn/dsl? ]

Someones got to tell how to do this Pleasssssseeee...

Pugerz, what OS are you on? Have you connected to any ISP using 128k? What have you done to try and connect at 128k?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 53 ✭✭Pug {erZ}

    Everything and then some

Have ISDN 128 at home ( new amd 2000 PC with Dreytec
MiniVigor ISDN modem with xp pro ) - which I was told can
run with 2 channel at 128 on IOL gold account with the
( important part ) 1891 cheap call number - less than
    1c per min off peak.

    I have used Unison/UTVnet/Eircomnet/Oceanfree at 64k

    I setup test accounts for Unison 128k ( a 1891 nbr like
    I wanted but terrible speeds ) and UTV 128k ( a 1890
    29% more expensive ) and they are v.slow compared to Oceanfree's 128k 1890 nbr....

I have ask Oceanfree for a pay account to access their
faster 128k but at the lower 1891 call charge - but they
    dont have 1 :(
so as they are same lines as IOL
I am guessing that if I can workout how to access this
2nd channel I would have what I need - tech support
said that there are a handful already doing this but as
they dont support 128k - cant tell me how its done.
I even tried to use 1 channel on my account and use my
sisters account on the other channel - but didnt work :(
I only use late at night so all calls off peak - btw IOL
single account almost as fast as Unisons dual channel

Comes down to money in the end last phone bill would
be 29% less if I knew how to set this up - last bill was
€180 and I cant keep that up :(

My Quake life is almost over - would almost prefer drug addiction
as it would be cheeper in the long run ...

Hey - these phone lines in Connemara are over 60 yrs old
and until HDSL is available we are going to be left out in
the cold ( adsl = within 7 km of dsl exchange HDSL is something
like 30 km ) or so I have been told.

In UK they are trying out a few different options for the countryside but nothing confirmed as of yet.

Guess still adds up to same thing - nothing for a year ++ :(

I'm sorry Pug but I couldn't gather whether you actually have had a multilink PPP dual channel 128k connection working?

Are you familiar with configuring dial up networking for multilink PPP?

Or do you get a reject from the ISP when your computer attempts to connect a second channel?

Also a word of warning. You are most likely to get charged for the second line being active, ie. if you have two channels up you'll pay for both of them.

So either you download slower and pay x amount, or download quicker and pay x amount, and have more time to run up an even bigger bill. For gaming, a second channel on isdn will not reduce your ping time.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 53 ✭✭Pug {erZ}

For gaming, a second channel on isdn will not reduce your ping time.

Actually my ping on Oceanfree goes from 110/120 1 channel
to 85/95 when 2 channels are connected.
for Quake 3 mind you - for CS I agree it makes little difference

Only want ISDN 2 channels for clan training & Matches, etc..
not pushed in download speeds, etc..

I have not done anything with ppp,etc.. just the normal/default
install option of modem used so far ..!! will go into PPP and
take a look at what can be done if anything

[ I have 2 channels up and working with Oceanfree but
using their 1890 number - looking for IOL's 1891 nbr
to get my 2nd channel working as their connection only
allows 1 channel - when I try 2nd channel it wont connect
and says something like unable to connect 2nd channel as
ISP already has your PC name already registered ...etc ]

Given that eircom are at my local exchange almost every day, about 5 van loads of them, bringing in various bits and pieces, I wonder if they are upgrading the exchange.

I am only 1 km from my exchange but as there are only around 400 houses within the 7km range and even less who use internet, I guess I will have to keep dreaming about ISDN and BB ;)

No ISDN is available to you now - as long as you live within 5 miles you can order 64 or 128 and they are quick to setup as well
took them 2 weeks to set me up - but it is expensive to run from
home €35 per channel per 2 month bill - worse is the call charges
per channel - phone 1901 and ask to setup ISDn - remember
charge for setup €100 and dont buy modem from them get off
ebay or elsewhere for €50 or so...

Check the nbr of hours online per week then x 10 for 2 months
and if its 128 then double it :(
local call/1890 same price - 1.26c per min best is a 1891 nbr
which is what I am on about now

and dont expect anyone to help you get on a low charge phone line..
