What's the deal with the file extensions variations?

Is there a difference between image files with .jpeg extensions to other image files with .jpg extensions? Similarly with RealMedia files, is there a difference between .rm & .ram files? And last but not least, .mpeg & .mpg files.

Anyone shed some light on this one for me? Cheers! :)

Theres no difference between mpg , mpeg & jpe,jpg jpeg. I think that all just dates back to the days of DOS when files had to be eight characters with a three letter extentions. Nowadays it doesn't matter what length the extention is so we're left with all these variations. You can prove it to yourself that they're all the same by renaming the file in question and noting that it still works like before.

rm and ram are different tho! An rm file is an actual audio file with music in it where as an ram is usually nothing more than a glorified text file with a web address inside it which is used in the process of streaming real audio.
