My daughter also uses 10 minute mail and fake name(usually combo of pets names) and dob, address etc, when sussing out a new site. She usually asks me and tries it this way(with me nearby) to decide if its worth her time.
The latest doing the rounds in her class is Horwse(sp?)where you can set up stables and train/breed horses, seems harmless enough and she set it up in dogs names, with a postal address in Hong Kong:D
Also this is spot on. Never provide actual real details such as dob (date of birth), real names, photos, phone number etc into the public domain. Think of it like this: would you put up a poster or flyer on the street containing these personal details? In effect this is what you could be potentially doing online.

The online world is far from private. It is a public street where every detail you put up is literally viewable by everyone on that street. Adults and kids alike should be educated as such.

Im 16 and i can do what i like on the net.Ive seen some weird crap and downloaded weird crap and to think that a chechen execution would phase me is laughable.Maybe i am messed up but i think over the age of 15 people need to discover the sickness and heath of the world that is the internet. If kids cant handle something theyll puke or just turn off it altogeter. This net nanny biz can be cracked too.Ive got cracks for dudes i know (over 15).THe world needs to relax and smoke a bifter.Everything settles after a while.Im settled comfortably in my chair. How r u?

    Eh... what?

Anyway. I suggest a completely differant login for your child. This gives them a sense of importance and anything you have (as an admin) will not be accessible by your child. If you had disturbing images, porn, video's or anything at all that could effect your child, they shouldn't be on that account in my opinion.

I'm familiar with checking history and cookies, etc but how do you log into the router ?

The manual for your router should explain how to do that.
