Follow the steps below and get a better idea :

    1) Download the LATEST version of Quake2 (Version 3.14)
    2) Download the LATEST version of CRBOTs (yes, Quake2 bots)
    3) Run Quake2 with the CRBOTs patch.
    4) Load up the warehouse deathmatch level
    5) Introduce 11 bots into the game in two teams. Put yourself
onto one of the teams. Range the bot skill levels between 5 and 8.
Give each team two different coloured skins. Give the bots a few names as well.
    6) Play on and off for around 8 hours.

Even better, play it on the net in two teams with 11 other people.

But I sure as hell feel that the weapon balance in Q2 is A LOT
better than Q1 (more like Doom IMHO).

Q2 does have its problems. Seems to be quite sh!te in
one on one's, although that might be due to the fact that
there aren't that many GOOD Quake 2 1-on-1 player maps out
(mostly just conversions of Quake 1 maps). Don't expect Quake 1
maps to play better in Quake 2 than they do in Quake 1, because they are
QUAKE 1 MAPS. Some map authors seem to have the misconception that
you can just map the Quake 1 weapon set onto the Quake 2 weapon set.
It's like converting a Doom2 map to Quake, and expecting a guy with a
super shotgun to be able to stand up to one with a RL. Fine in Doom, not so
    fine in Quake :).

Anyway, people shouldn't be too quick to dismiss Quake 2 so easily. It's to
be expected that people would have a preferance to a game that they have
spent a lot of time getting to grips with and getting used to its
    smallest quirks and little tricks.

I'm just saying that the Irish Gaming scene shouldn't go _back_ into the
dark ages because some prominent players / organisers can't cope with
or couldn't be bothered to get to grips with a newer, somewhat different game, which
has its own advantages and disadvantages.
I'm not discussing whether Quake 2 is better than Quake 1, and I'm definitely
not suggesting that anybody should stop playing Quake 1.

What I'm saying is, does Ireland want to be like the only kid in the neighbourhood who won't
let go of their old C64 because they are so used to its small nice features, and having trouble
getting accustomed to that new Pentium OS ?

Yes. More weapons, more variety, better gameplay.

the DM maps are great. q2dm1 has been the home of some of my
    most enjoyable net DMs.

excuse me for a sec. We don 't NEED prominent players
to convert. We can handle ourselves just fine. What we dont need
is people like Alan hounding us out of #quake when we disagree with him because I 'm a q2 tosser.
Things are getting there, especially thanks to John Breslins server efforts.

Clans are going ahead slowly. People are showing up more and more.
Things are a HELL of a lot better than q1 was before I left it, but thats not saying much.
Stop the slagging and learn to live with us.
