    Redundancy pay to be improved

MUCH improved redundancy payments are on the way for those who lose their jobs as the economy contracts, the Tanaiste promised yesterday.

The boosted packages are a key Government commitment under the recently concluded national partnership agreement, "Sustaining Progress." The new Redundancy Payments Bill, published yesterday, will provide for two weeks' statutory redundancy for every year of service, regardless of age.

The law as it stands creates a bias between service by persons under or over 41 years of age. This distinction is to be abolished, and the additional bonus week is being retained and will apply to all workers.

The statutory payment is just a week or a half-week per year of service, depending on age. For young workers, the new Bill will represent a quadrupling of their entitlement.

Massive improvements to the redundancy system were a key demand of the trade union movement during the national pay talks. The Government commitment in this area encouraged them to accept a deal holding pay increases to 7pc over eighteen months.
