Music that makes you want to bob your head and do a quick shuffle with your feet while you walk along listening to it on headphones. Think sleazy, almost pr0n music, or maybe some latin vibes, think cool piano solo's or maybe a deadly dance tune - all genre's welcome.

    My offerings:

Deadbeats - Funky For You (Spacehopper Mix)
Nightmares on wax - grand unified - shake up (jaddle remix)
dave pike set - mathar original indian vibes
    9 lazy 9 - black jesus
A Forest Mighty Black - Everything (freakniks remix)
Ramsey Lewis - The In Crowd
Googie Rene Combo - Smokey Joe's La La
Young Holt Unlimited - Soulful Strut
    Wildchild - Renegade Master
The Wiseguys - Ooh La La
    C J Bolland - It ain't gonna be me
    Ballistic Brothers - Blacker
Nightmares on Wax - Nights Interlude

    Some nice choices there Megadude.

    Lemme add..

Maceo Parker : Shake Everything You Got (From Life On Planet Groove) Has one hell of a sax solo on it by Maceo.

Stevie Wonder : Boogie On Reggae Woman (Fulfillingness First Finale) For that moment during his keyboard solo when he growls....."Can I Play, CAN I Play)

Funkadelic : Flashlight 12" Version. A song that will truly exhaust you.

James Brown : Cold Sweat (Live At The Apollo Theatre). Im only picking one song from each artist.....

Prince : Housequake (Sign O' The Times) This album needs to be remastered.

Aaron Nevile : Hercules (Have it on a compilation) Listen to that bass line!

The Meters : The Hand Clapping Song

The Flirtations : Nothing But A Heartache

Ahhhhh, i could go on and on.....i feel like making a mix cd for me car now tho'

Hey Samba, just noticed your inclusion of Fela Kuti, have you got the Red Hot and Riot album? Its bloody fantastic, a tribute album to Fela Kuti has loads of great artists doing his songs. People like D'angelo, Lateef, Gift Of Gab, Dead Prez, Bilal, Talib Kweli, Meshell Ndegeocello and Femi Kuti is on a few tracks too.

There is a version of Water No Get Enemy that blows my socks off anyhow.
You can get it through Play if your interested.

Sly and The Family Stone's - There's a Riot goin on

...is one of the strongest, grooviest, laid back funk albums I've ever heard. Its so raw and amazing. No tacky brass, no endless chanting, no mindless wandering. This album is what funk should be. Pure, soulful, gritty, unbelievably groovy. I recommend it.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,894 ✭✭✭Mr. Fancypants

Yep, was talking about www.play.com . I missed the Femi Kuti gig and have been kicking myself (was out of Dublin at the time) you are the first person i heard that went to it tho'. What was it like?

I just bought two albums by Betty Davis. As in the once wife of Miles Davis. You can't buy her albums anywhere in Ireland, so I bought them online from a place in Massachusets, USA. And OH MY GOD!!! There are THE RAWEST, HARDEST, Most Rockin Funk albums ever! I bought:

    Betty Davis - Nasty Gal

    and

Betty Davis - They say I'm Different

.....the fact that these albums aren't available in Ireland is a crime. She Growls like James Brown, but also sings quite sultry and laid back like Stevie Wonder sometimes, but the thing that makes her albums unique is The Raw riff power, filthy raunchy lyrics, pounding Bass lines, snappy drum grooves, and bouncy clavinets, clavichords. No wonder they weren't allowed play it on the radio here in the 70's. All of her albums were made from 1970 - 75. I highly recommend her albums for anybody who loves Funk, but can do without all of the cheesiness. Betty Davis is a Legend!
