Vodafone new SIM for GPRS - charged or free?

Hi, there was talking to a mate who was advised by Vodafone that he needed a new SIM card in order to solve some problems he was having with GPRS (he just started using the service).

So he went to a Vodafone Store where they gave him a new (32k SIM), next Vodafone bill he gets, he sees a charge for a new SIM card.

I sent him the details below and he is now getting a refund for the SIM upgrade. So in case anyone else has been charged for a SIM upgrade for GPRS, this is the information I sent him:

    http://www.vodafone.ie/aboutus/company/press/2002/release220202.jsp

"The company also announced that all Vodafone stores will have SIM readers installed which will allow customers to upgrade their SIM cards to new improved 32K versions which will enable them to avail of the multitude of mobile data services available and to become GPRS enabled. The SIM readers will ensure that customers' details saved on their phones can be easily transferred from an old SIM to a new one."

The press release read to me like they were offering it as a courtesy service. When I got mine updated I mentioned the release in the store and they said if I was upgrading the SIM in order to use GPRS then it wouldn't cost anything. I got the upgrade done last March and there was no charge.

I called the Voda helpdesk to query it last June. The main helpdesk said they had set up a team to manage the SIM upgrade process for GPRS and transferred me over. I spoke to a lady who said if the upgrade was for the 32k SIM for GPRS usage there should have been no charge and advised to give regular helpdesk a call on 1907, mention the 32k SIM upgrade for GPRS and they would look into a refund.
