I was bored over the weekend and made this. It was subsequently linked over at Indymedia.

What interests me is the reaction in that thread. The initial poster wanted to spam the message board of my site and a few follow up posters insulted me. I got a few similar messages on my own board. So this raises the point - do people follow links before commenting on them?

The page is clearly satirical and I didn't think anyone would take it seriously, but quite a few people do. Did they read the page and not get it, or did they post knee-jerk reactions simply because its a different political point of view? Their reaction got me interested enough to read some Irish socialist forums and on almost every board I came across the same thing: people trying to silence those who disagree with them. Take a look over here and read the thread "Socialist Party members and other left activists drive fascists out of UCD". The facsist activist was driven off the campus and the posters quickly declare a victory for civil rights. The hypocracy lies within the first post.

"We do not believe that people who want to smash the democratic rights won by working class and young people should be entitled to those rights such as freedom of speech."

So, freedom of speech should only be allowed when you agree with the message. This seems to be a belief common to all political extremists, but why? The only conclusion I can come to is that their own positions simply can't stand up to debate and they feel the need to shut up everyone else. Wanting to spam my message board is a minor example, chasing someone off campus is a big one. How can any group claiming to be concerned with civil rights possibly justify the belief that all those who disagree should not be allowed to speak?

    Your thoughts?

I read the debate about the resident holocaust denier with some dismay (there must have been a link to it from here as I've largely given up on indymedia as "independent media"). The guy (Wallace) is clearly a nutter but reactions like the one above are pretty dangerous as well as hypocritical.

I also can't believe that anyone could have taken your site seriously (so obviously a pisstake) then go on a rant against it, essentially proposing a DoS attack. You know that rule we have here about attacking the post, not the poster? It's pretty good advice for daily living as a general rule. The other guy always has the right to a point of view, even if you think he's an idiot. These guys obviously haven't discovered that yet.

I have to say that the entire concept of socialists ejecting someone from the campus for handing out leaflets is just plain befuddling in it's hypocrisy. It's like an atheist saying "MAY GOD STRIKE YOU DOWN" and looking skyward. Weird.

This is how they handle it in UCC apparently (with thanks to daveirl for the original post):

I haven't read your site, but I'd recommend you put up this recommendation for war:

"War footage from the Gulf War of 1991 seems fine, but compared to footage from today you will notice a certain lack of crispness and detail. Modern recording equipment allows much clearer picture than sound than ever before. When we look through the file footage, where is our HDTV footage with 6.1 sound? We must attack Iraq."

The most interesting link is worldnet news...good design overall....but I think you mean it :) ps...make sure your uk registry is private as you could find yourself under threat from these idiots. (I know sometimes I've even had the pleasure of marching near them.)

I'm already taking care of this problem. Not only is that not my name, I requested to be opted out of the Whois database in the first place. The last thing I want to do is bring down **** on the person who let me use their credit card.

    Brilliant site!

I visited the forum expecting a full on bun-fight but sadly the UCD/indymedia tossers forgot to turn up...oh well! :D

Once I get everything sorted out I'll try and draw their attention. I gave socialists a special mention under the Join page, so that should help get them riled up.
