Harney moves on personal injuries claims

(10:53) The Tánaiste Mary Harney has said moves are afoot to establish a mediation service to process claims for personal injuries.

Speaking to an Oireachtas committee, Ms Harney said Courts should be the last resort for people seeking damages.

She said legislation would be introduced so that people lodging claims for personal injuries would have to go to a mediation service before approaching the Courts.

Meanwhile, the insurance group FBD has held out the prospect of lower motor insurance premiums.

The company has reported that its motor insurance losses more than halved last year to just over €10 million.

It said motor underwriting appeared to have benefited from the introduction of the penalty points system late last year.

FBD said that if this trend continued, it was realistic to hope for reductions in premiums in the short to medium term.

Ok, I am gonna use my Magic Boards.ie Crystal Ball (TM) and say that 9 in every 10 cases is gonna end up in the courts anyway. If you give people somewhere to appeal to, they are gonna go there to get more cash.

Well if you have a choice between a 100% chance of €20,000 now or an 80% chance of €25,000 later, which would you take?
