Prisoners murdered at US base in Afghanistan
    06/03/2003 - 7:50:39 am

The deaths of two prisoners at a US base in Afghanistan have been ruled as murder by military coroners.

A US Army investigation of the deaths is continuing, says Colonel Roger King, a spokesman for US forces at the base in Bagram.

The two prisoners died on December 3 and December 10 at the makeshift prison in the US compound at the Afghan base north of Kabul.

The post mortems that labelled the deaths as "homicides" found the men had been beaten, and one had a blood clot in his lung, Colonel King says.

US forces are holding an unknown number of prisoners at Bagram.
...and another batch in Cuba. I dunno, it really concerns me when countries decide that they can redefine and twist things like the Geneva Convention when it suits them. Isn't that the kind of behaviour we've come to expect from dictators? How far does it go? When does it stop? Who decides?

Simply put, theres nobody to stop them.

The UN ceased to be a force, once the US decided to ignore them. The UN had a chance of staying a force, if the rest of the organisation had banded up against the US, but now its fragmenting, with some pro & some anti war. It also has the US bribing member states to fall in line with its own policies. The UN is still a policy making organisation, unfortuently it doesn't have either the power to back up these policies, or it doesn't have the respect of its member states.

The US will continue to try to break other modern conventions until someone tries to stop them. In other words, its not going to end. The US will break every rule in the book, simply because they can. The other reason, might be that they're great for introducing rules/guidelines, but not all that good at following/implementing them.

The US prides itself on its military engineers, and they've been in Afghanistan how long, so how come the prison was still "makeshift"?

Seems the US are following their normal procedure of torture. Pity the UN, or any other organisation isn't willing or able to point out the Geneva Convention to them.

I wonder how long before some of the prisoners "try" to escape, and are shot.
