PAL VCR + NTSC Tape = HELP!

I just got a tape off EBay, but the problem is it's NTSC. My VCR is a Philips VR730. The manual says it plays NTSC cassettes, but only "on PAL television sets that support 60hz". I'm playing it back to a TV-in card that supports NTSC, so that shouldn't be a problem. However, when I play the tape back, I get the picture, but it's in black and white and the sound is garbled. Can anyone help?

What happens when you play it back through your tellie?
Also, there may be an option for your TV card software to switch from PAL->NTSC.

you can get some tv/video specialist shop to make a pal copy for about 10 euro

My TV-in card has an NTSC option, but that doesn't seem to be helping. I think it might have something to do with SP/LP, as my VCR claims to automatically detect which type the tape uses, and it detected this tape as SP, but it's playing so fast I think it might actually be LP. Unfortunately, I can't find any way to manually set which type. When I play it on my TV I get the same thing. It looks like I'll have to try one of those specialist shops. Do you know any in the Dublin area?

Are you using SCART lead to connect or just an RF lead?

I'm using a scart lead to connect the VCR to the TV-in card. But it plays other tapes fine, so I don't think that's the problem.

NTSC VCRs have 3 tape speed modes - think that they're SP/LP and EP. But if it a commercial tape would expect it to be plain ol' SP.

could it just be a dud tape?

Nah, the tape's real. I gave up after a while and took it to a specialist shop on Gardiner Street, they're converting it to SP PAL for me.
