i have a radeon 9700 pro with dx9.0 and the catalyst 3.0 drivers. but whenever i play any game related to half-life (mods eg. cs, the specialists, digital paintball etc.) after a couple of minutes of play, the computer shuts down.....but the LED stays on and it wont restart unless i turn it off at the wall and then restart. i had the 3.1 drivers installed but the same thing was happening so i downgraded but to no avail. can someone help? pretty please?

Sounds like its going into standby, you're not mauling any function keys by any chance? :)

is your PSU able for the 9700 or is it giving out? If you have any motherboard monitoring s/w lookat the voltages and see if they are low...

Seen something about this on guru3d.com
ATI 9700 has issues with older type shaders and feels a reboot is in order.

    Check guru3d,

I know this is probably not going to be of any help, sorry.

When CS1.4 (I think) was first released, there were major issues with Radeon based cards running in OpenGL mode, a patch had to be released. I had to run for a while in D3D mode :(

Also, recently I bought a new hard drive and installed WinXP, after installing all my regular software, I decided to play Half-Life before I had installed CS and all the required patches.
I got a warning, stating that Half-Life had known compatibility issues with WinXP!
I installed all the patches and CS, it now works fine.

    Are you running WinXP?
If so, is HL patched to the latest version?

Also, try changing from OpenGL to D3D mode, if it runs without problems it is probably a Radeon/OpenGL problem.
