I've played the demo, liked it quite a bit & intend to buy the full thing. 'Course i liked the unreal 2 disaster quite a bit as well. Guess once a game meets some basic criteria (half-decent graphics in keeping with the times, doesn't run like a dog on the average pc of the times etc etc) no-one can tell you whether you are going to like a game or not, much like a piece of music really. Sure get your hands on the demo if you can.

Where did ye guys buy the game anyway?, amazon or something? i was holding out for the apr. 11 release for fear of buying it from amazon .com & it taking a month to float accross the atlantic.

ok, i am halfway trough the game and it annoyed me a lot to even get here.

    formula of the game:
do dogfight missions in space (nopes, no freelancing, you need to complete the missions in order to move up in the game -experience levels- and then you get better ships which by then are equal to your enemies.

continue to do so for the next 30 levels/missions ..as following the storyline.
everywhere you go, you meet people at the bars who ask you 'are you new here?' untill you can't take it anymore !

as i said , buy it in budget , certainly no 'Elite' game

6 years of development for that? sounds kinda obvious why chris roberts jumped ship some time ago.

i played the demo for 1 hour, and i was asked was i new maybe 10 times, i wanted to reply "fcuk off, im a regular"

the game could have been so good . . . but its rubbish

very linear, no freedom, to land on a planet you fly up to a dock? you point and click in a resident evil type of way, in the bars and shops, and then the conversation is all skripted, few options to change the course of the game,

For this game to be good, it should have included

    - first person view of your ship, being able to roam the corridors, man the bridge, interact with your crew

    - fly into the atmosphere of any planet, and if possible land and explore the surface in space suits, with different terrain and gravity for each planet

    - a full galaxy with millions of systems, all with full economics, political alliances, species, like elite, but more refined

    - being able to explore alien cities (attack of the clones), interact with aliens (ie kill them), get a job, complete freelancing

maybe I am dreaming, and a game this big would come on a100GB hard drive rather than a cd, but until them i am sticking with elite: first encouters :)

Aye i did. I've played it briefly on a below average p800 with a gf2 & although sluggish is still playable with the detail turned down. I used to be the sort that demanded an absolute minimum of 60-85 fps but i'm getting more tolerant in my old age. It plays just fine on my 1800xp/ti500, which isn't that far off the average pc now.

The main thing I don't like about it is that I've completed the demo and the full version is not out until the 11April.
Not sure exactly why I like it so much.
The demo was a bit repetitive but I'd imagine the full version will have more in it.

Turn environment detail to low, it helps a LOT with your FPS, I like charecter detail on max tho, looks nice and doesnt effect FPS that much, I was getting 30-40fps on a GF3 Ti200 and 900mhz athlon on 1024x768resoloution.

Just hit escape at the start of conversations with random NPCs to cut to the chase (dialog box).

I had such high hopes for this game feck sake. I'll have to wait till I can download the demo at home and give it a lash for myself. Well hopefully Eve online will live up to its previews.

Iv played the full version and would agree with all the negative stuff abouve, was hopeing for a decent Privatear style game :(

The space combat is disapointing to say the least...

It's sad that the original massively multiplayer privateer concept got scaled back to a diet caffeine free privateer lite. What I can't understand is why Braben sued Bell and Elite cloners, but never sued Origin over Privateer, or (more constructively) worked with Origin to make it even better. I just don't get that guy.

I've been playing the Beta and I agree; the plot is overly linear and the controls are just rubbish, nevertheless it does kinda suck you in....room for improvement no doubt, but still a game I think to devote some time to.

You guys should try Independence War 2 - Edge of Chaos.
It's been out awhile and in my opinion it's better then Freelancer.

The missions are varied but more importantly they are not timed so you can explore, pirate, trade as much as you like in between them.
There's loads of space to explore with a good feeling of all the differenct factions going about their own business's.
You frequently come across AI battles, accidents and other oppurtunities.

Combat is great with varied weapons and ships and it does have a physics engine so if feels "spacey".

It should be out on budget by now so check it out.

Theres a jarHedz server just gone up recently, and although I haven't had a chance to check it out yet, it seems like the lads are really enjoying the game.

The different roles of Freighter, Pirate, Escorts, Bounty Hunters have already become established. So it seems like theres enough diversity in the rolls to keep the online game going.

A couple of problems have been noted, but all the same, when is a new game without its bugs???

To find the jarHedz server search the game browser for www.jarhedz.com. The server is passworded, and the password can be obtained on the jarHedz Forums

You my good man are the lord of the silly suggestions.

    For starters...

There IS a first person mode if you had even bothered to glance at either the readme file or the ingame key options, CTRL + V.

Next, what kind of drivel is this "millions of systems" crap? I hope you are being sarcastic because its highly unlikely that a game with any combination of those features will come out in our gametime.

If you were disappointed that this game does not have these features, then you surely have the most amazing collection of games known to man to be able to compare to what you expected from this game.

You may aswell say, "I was disappointed with Fords new car as it did not have the rocket boosters, warp engines, sidewinders, side mounted machine guns and laser turrets that would have made it a good car".

    Your fathomless ridiculousness ASTOUNDS me.

I play on Jarhedz radox servers all the time.
Only last night on DOD server i was talking on voice comms to the server owner and owner of the Freelancer server,he says the game is very very good.I daily visit our forum on Jarhedz and the forum is full of nothing but praise.
I personally have not played Freelancer but totally trust the guys who i play along on Jarhedz servers with.
I appreciate everyone has different taste but these guys love it and whats more these guys are serious veteran gamers.
Having said that i could very well hate the game but from what i hear its superb and the only negatives ive heard are the above threads.
I say to anyone is dont rule it out yet.
Multiplayer as usual is the holy grail of any game.

Unfortunatly there is not a lot to be said for the multiplayer aspect either :(

I too had high hopes for the idea of choosing a path as a pirate or a trader or smuggler etc but it simply isnt the case. In the beginning you trade until you have enough money to buy the best ship and then you...well thats it really.

After you have your Titan and lvl 10 guns theres, sadly, not a lot left to do except pvp, but this is flawed because all you loose when you die is your cargo, and the dog fighting has been completly dumbed down to point and lean on the fire button.

The result is a very 2 dimensional multiplayer experience. There are only 2 'classes', trader and general fighter, there is no sense of personal style as there is clearly 2 ships that are just plain better than the rest (Humpback and Titan) both of which can be obtained in a matter or hours.

Throw this in with whats mentioned above and a completly static universe and it doesnt amount to much I'm afraid.

The only hope I have for it is a couple of decent mods to liven it up a little, cos otherwise it wont hold attention for more than a week or two.
