I would have to say, for a sheer rollercoaster of emotions, the first Liverpool V Newcastle 4-3 game.

For the best display of brilliant football, the 4-0 AC Milan V Barcelona European Cup final 1994. Pure class by Milan.

They're the first ones that came into my head in anyway...

the two that stand out from recent memory are

    1. the 1999 champions league semi final Man Utd vs Juventus
    2. last years semi real madrid vs barcelona (1st leg)

you've got to love the ireland - germany world cup game for the sheer persistence of the irish towards the end.

Argentina-Romania in WC94, a 3-2 thriller with some superb football and a couple of cracking goals.

    one of 3

    3. Pats vs Bohs 3-3 in 95 ,yah had to be there ,that git Swan got a superb hatrick.

    2. Celtic vs Pats 0-0 away in CELTIC PARK Champions league 1998 yah had to be there (Damn you Martin O Reilly 84th minute one on one the moment of your frikkin footall life and you put it wide ).

    1. Pats vs Slovan Bratislava 4-3 , Pats 3-0 down after 16 minutes pulled it back to 3-3 with some inspiring football only to lose to a scabby goal in the 90th minute.

Rovers 4 Bohs 6 Santry, 2000, its amazing to think that on the same day as this pure drama was unfolding for real, thousands more people were attending a Dream Team game at Tolka. Going to see an imaginary team instead of a Dublin derby says something bad about the Irish soccer public.

On the telly, one of the best games I can remember watching was Milan 4 Steua Bucharest 0 in the European Cup final circa 89. More recently, I'd agree our game against Germany was a classic.

The one that sticks out in my head the most is the United vs. Arsenal FA Cup Semi-Final Replay in 1999. It truely had everything in it and then to top it all off, Giggs scores a wonder goal. Brilliant game.

    United v Bayern CL Final

    Liverpool Vs. Newcastle
Arsenal Vs. Chelsea FA cup quarter final

I also think the Ireland world cup games were pretty exciting seeing as how we went one down in three of them The German and Spanish match were probably the most nail-biting

United coming back from two down against Villa in the Cup last year was a brilliant game, but I would say the 99 champions league final was the best match. Not for quality of football but I sat on the edge of my seat for the whole game, and the finish was incredible.

The Celtic v Juventus matches last year in the champions league,
both games were magnificent even though amoroso was a diving scumbag.

The Liverpool V Alaves UEFA Cup Final 2001. Purely because of the amount of goals in the game, 5-4 in any match is gonna be exciting, in a final its a bit mad ! Great stuff...

Don't know how many of you watched this, but it nearly killed me

    Man City vs Gillingham
    2nd Division Playoff Final
    Wembley Stadium 1999

    Man City 2 Gillingham 2

City, after dominating the game, go a goal down in the latter stages of the 2nd half... on the 86th minute Gillingham score another. In the 89th minute Kevin Horlock pulled one back for City. The 4th official indicated 5 minutes of time added on - the 94th minute sees Paul Dickov bury the ball past the Gillingham Keeper Vince Bartram (Dickov was best man at his wedding the week before!)...

I leapt so high in the air for that goal that I had a pain in me hole for a week!

The match went to penalties in extra time and City won the shoot-out 3-1.

Are u a City fan? Jazes, I remember that game, it was absolutely nuts. I was sure City were fecked being 2-0 down with a couple of mins to go...great entertainment.

    Celtic 5 - 1 Rangers.

I was there and the atmosphere was fantastic to say the least.

For my sins yes, I am a City fan. That game was absolutely mental - from abject depression and sorrow to absolute joy in the space of 6 minutes...

Was over at Maine Road a couple of weeks ago, drinking in Mossides St. Crispins Catholic Social Club (hurrah!) and the moment that Dickov scored THAT goal was the subject of much nostalgic bleary eyed reminicsing...

I have a little Mpeg of it - Alan Green's (I think) commentary is great "and surely this is the last chance for City... Horlock... Dickov... CAN YOU BELIEVE IT!!"

Dickov runs and slides to his knees, leaning back and clenching his fists in front of his chest as 50,000 city fans go mental in the background - classic!
    :D

I remember a particular FA cup clash between Everton and Liverpool at Goodison Park...1991 was the year I think

    It finished a 4-4 draw...Was a Totally Memorably match

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,164 ✭✭✭Space Coyote

i hate thinking about that game...liverpool's defending was diabolical, and thats an understatement ! their attacking play was brilliant, what a great goal by John Barnes, curler from the corner of the 18 yard box was perfection.
of course everton won the replay 1-0 and kenny Dalglish resigned as manager...grr

Liverpool vs Newcastle 1996 4-3. Greatest game ever played.
Ireland vs Spain - World Cup 2002. Most nail biting match ever. Still can't believe we missed 4 penalties in the one match.

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,164 ✭✭✭Space Coyote

Another one I'd rate as one of the most exciting games I've ever watched...Spain 4-3 Yugoslavia in Euro 2000 (thanx knobbles ;) ). Absolute cracking game of football. Spain had to win to get through to next round, were 3-2 down with a couple of minutes to go. Mendieta scores a peno, then Whatshisface, Alfonso I think it was, gets the winner in injury time. The Yugoslavs were distraught, but then they realised that they were though to next round aswell!
    Brilliant stuff altogether.

apart from the obvious irish internationals, i'll go for...

    spain 4-3 yugoslavia
you just beat me to it spacecoyote, it was euro 2000,
cracking game, it may as well have been ireland playing i went so mad went spain turned it around. best international game i think i've ever watched(excl ireland of course)

    Everton 3-2 Wimbledon (1994 i think),
last day of season, everton needed to win or they were relegated. 2-0 down at goodison park and somehow came back and barry horne scored a cracking goal to save them with minutes left. You don't always need trophies to have fond memories of your club!

Celtic 6 Huns 2, could have been so much different if Wallaces goal had been allowed to stand
    :D

    Ireland 1-0 England, Euro 88
    Ireland 1-0 Italy, WC 94
    Ireland 1-1 Germany, WC 2002
    Spain 4-3 Yugoslavia, Euro 2000
Liverpool 5-4 Alaves, UEFA Cup Final 2001

Probably pick out Ireland vs. Itlay as my all-time faveourite. Such brilliant play by Ireland against the eventual runners-up in the tournament.

As a Blackburn fan, I would have to say that the most memorable day was in May 95 with Liverpool 2-1 Blackburn and West Ham 1-1 Man Utd. So many emotions and changing fortunes.

(Villa Park) 8/4/1990 FA Cup Semi-Final : Crystal Palace 4-3 Liverpool (AET). The greatest performance I've ever seen by any team who were so univerally written off before kick off. This was the same side that had lost 9-0 to Liverpool just 6 months earlier.

(Bruges) 21/6/2000 European Championships : Spain 4-3 Yugoslavia. Spain needed to win to qualify for quarter finals but were 2-3 down (and presumably out?) after an amazing 90 minutes of footy. Yet somehow after all that they still managed to score twice in injury time to surpass even ManU's comeback achievment in the 1999 CL final.

(Dortmund) 16/5/01 Liverpool 5-4 Alaves : After a decade of watching cagy negative football (especially in cup finals) I'd given up hope that I'd ever see a tournement decider like this again! Reaffirming stuff.

(Prenton Park, Liverpool) 1998 : Shelbourne 3-5 Rangers - Shelbourne were inexplicably winning 3-0 at around 70 minutes but fitness finally told and the Scotish side ran away with it in the end.

    //

The Great game that I wish I had seen : UEFA Cup 1984 - Bohemians 3-2 Rangers (Dalymount Park)
