Forgotten the name of an overhead fantasy style action-shooter

The game was an overhead shooter in the MERCS style. Always scrolling upward with a big boss at the end. I think it features a cliched barbarian like Rastan as the main character and he threw axes. Other than that I just remember it being very fun and addictive. Anybody got any ideas?

Someone on another board though of the name. It's called Vandyke and was released in 1990. I wasn't far off.
