Where, though? Are you in the area that has always had NTL (parts of Tallaght and "Dublin 16W") or is this something new?

can you be a little more specific so we can see if this is a new area they are testing or if you were in the already enabled area.

Well then it isn't exactly news. By all accounts some people have had "free months" since they first signed up (NTLS billing department doesn't have the best reputation in the world).

The NTL Ireland Cable Internet page hasn't been updated since January 31st, but there've been a couple of posts about the 600K upgrade, and the "modem rental included" change.

What we all really want to hear is that they're extending the area that's covered!

like i said in my 1st post , i didnt know if it had been posted before.

But NTL has been good to me, I didnt have to pay anything for my 1st 2 years of dail up. only started paying this february so i paid once, and that was only €12.50 a month.

and now i get this offer for Cable. I didnt get this offer before it's new to me.

:) Now you know why they're practically bankrupt - it's all your fault :)

yeah, they're nearly as bad as ESAT when it comes to selling their service - they seem to have this notion that they should just sit there and have people just send them money out of the blue. Of course, they can't do TV or radio advertising, because they only offer the product in a tiny area, and it's been a while since they bothered to do a mailshot (which is a lot cheaper than paying people to knock on doors, but possibly not quite as effective.

is the 2 years i got the free Dail up connection i did get a bill aswell, it had the cost of the Dail up access and then on the next line it had a discount to the same amount , jus to show me what it would have cost.

I added it up and roughly it was about €9400 in total. so i saved a packet over the 2 years,

But in saying that if i was paying for it i wouldnt have used it that much :)

I live in an enabled area and was wondering what work ntl have to do in your house ie extra outlets etc. Do you have to have a digibox (ie. have digital tv to avail of cable broadband )? Is cable broadband more suitable for gamming, I've heard that eircom's adsl isn't. I also heard ntl had stoped offering broadband, is this true?

    Nice one.

well as far as i know you dont need a digibox to get broadband, i dont have a digibox and i'm getting it,

broadband is with a dout better for online gamming up to 18 times faster then 56k,

NTL has not stopped offer broadband, well they came to my house about 2 hours ago offering it to me.

as for the work they have to do it's very little, with the new fiber opital cable they layed all over the place i think all they have to do is come into your house, install a Cable modem to you computer and Phone line, and away you go. :) not sure tho i have never seen 1 been installed.

don't count ur chickens just yet. I live in the Old Bawn area of Tallaght. I've had 2 NTL salesmen call to my door in the last 2 months, offering the cable internet access. oth times i've been out and they were dealing with my mam(who couldn't even change a lightbulb), and she asked them to call back in the evening when i'm there. Both times I rang NTL sales, both times I was told that i was not able to get cable internet access, i explained the story about sales calling to house while i was not in, they said the door to door sales don't have access to the database to see who's entitled to cable internet access. Lost the rag both times on the phone with those NTL idiots. Just be warned, u may have signed up to something that you don't have access to. If I were you, until u have the install done and completed dont build ur hopes up too much. By the way, what area of tallaght are u in?

Well i'll be in the house when they call, so i hope what happened to you wont happen to me,

    I live in Tymon.

The install will go something like this:

ntl crew (one or two people) will show up. One guy wil have a look around the house, ask you which room the cable modem is going into.

They will install a new cable point beside your computer (very neat, they'll discuss the cable route with you before they do anything)

They'll plug the cable modem into the cable point and into your computer. The modem should have both an ethernet and a USB conection (if you get the same model I got)

They'll set up and register the cable modem on the computer. Given that you have a dial up account with them, you'll probably keep the same username/email address etc.

I've had NTL for about 9 months now and had to do the install myself pretty much,The guys NTL contract to fit the modem ( I think it's ICL ) never arrived cause I supplied my own modem ( they only offered USB @ the time ) and the staff on the phone are about as clued in as George Bush Jr!!!!!!,I did get friendly with the NTL technician that installed the modem point and he informed me that outside of Dublin 24,12,16 everywhere else is gonna get a hybrid system involving your phoneline for uploads and your T.V point for downloads so not sure if this ties up your phone. The reason being that NTL are **** outta cash to upgrade their system country wide
