Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Pound for Pound what player has been the best value buy since the premiership began ?

(leave your team allegiances out of it)

pound for pound it has to be Viera. I think he cost only a couple of million and must be worth a shed load more than that.

In recent times Anelka has to be the all time best - cost half a million - sold for 23 million - excellent.

Also Roy Keane was a steal back when he moved to ManU - not to forget Cantona.

Any one of them will do

Eric Cantona - 1 million squids.

    Peter Schmeichel - 800,000.

    Sami Hyppia - something similar.

    Jermaine Jenas - 5 million.

Peter Schmeichel and Sami Hyppia definately. The former turned out to be a brilliant buy for Utd and Hyppia is currently shown that he is worth more than he was bought for.

    Denis Irwin.

I agree with Kdjac. Irwin was the first name to come into my head when I saw the thread title. Only cost United bout £300,000 and went on to become their most decorated player of all time.

Cantona. Or Irwin. Or Martin Keown.

Dunno about the premiership, but I think the best value deal in Britain in general has got to be Larsson

Harry Kewell to Leeds - Free.
John Arne Riise to Liverpool - 4m.
Brad Friedel to Blackburn - Free.
    Freddie Ljungberg to Arsenal 3m.

    Cantoan
    Schemeichel
    Irwin
    Bruce

    Hyppia
    Friedel
    Zola

Riise not too sure he is a bargain yet

Kewell was got on a free!! that was a bargain

    About £100 more. ;)

Seriously though if you are talking about best value then surely the player has had to have had a very successful career in the premiership and with his club in Europe.

My choices would be Cantona, Shearer or Irwin.

Yeah because just look at all of the success Shearer has had with his club in Europe.........;)

Nevermind the fact he cost £15m and has no medals to show for his time at Newcastle. Hardly bargain basement stuff there.

He won a championship in 1995. Thats one more than Hyppia.

Plus he has scored more goals than anyone else in ten years of the premiership. If a player gets you 20-30 league goals every season then he is worth every penny.

He has played for two other teams apart from Newcastle.

I thought the thread was title "Best Value Ever" and not "cheapest average player".

Good point about Shearer ,each of his transfers were big ones but he has done his job at every club and scored goals.

Still hate the git but good at what he does.
Could argue he neve did well in CL cos he was never with a decent team in CL.
If he had of signed for UTD he would have a lot more games and goals in CL>

But then, the whole squad's been a bit of a disappointment this season really. :(

But Hyypia was a superb buy. And indeed Gary McAllister was great for the duration of his stay at Anfield.

But Larsson was I think one of the best buys by any UK club.

That's true, but you yourself said that he had to have a succesful career in the premiership and with his club in Europe. I don't deny that he is top class player and when he was bought to newcastle he did his job well but what has he gotten in Europe ?

Hyypia has a FA cup winners medal, Uefa Cup winners medal and a League cup medal, all gotten in a season when Liverpool's main strength was it's defence, of which he was a mainstay.

I am not saying Shearer is a sh*t player, he is excellent. But there are player out there bought for less with equally impressive goals to games ratio. Therefore they would be better value

Can you name them please. If there is a better striker than Shearer over the past 11 seasons I certainly dont know of him.

Also as I said before he has played for two other teams apart from Newcastle.

Blackburn signed him for 3.6 million in 1992 at the start of the permiership and was seriously injured in his first season. The next three seasons he scored 30 plus goals and was then transferred to Newcastle.

I believe that is very good value for money. How much would you pay now for a 25 year old Shearer? 30-40 million?

He did pretty well in Europe this season. Certainly better than Hyppia.

If thats your argument then Steve Bruce or Denis Irwin is much better value because of the number of trophies they have won.

Wouldnt put Hypia up there as i picked Irwin assuming it meant consistently good not one season.
Shearer equally over his 2 transfers has been a machine in front of goal.

Yes, Shearer cost £15million and has had one or two bad seasons with Newcastle hasn't he? He's only really picked up since he retired from international football.

It's not my argument, it's yours I am just quoting it back to you. You said that "The player had to have done well with his club in Europe". Shearer hasn't, with any club in Europe, it is not anything to do with their trophies either I was just replying to your "one more league title than Hyypia" comment.

Getting to the second group stage of the CL is a good season for Newcastle.

If I meant actually winning in Europe then I would be restricted to talking about United, Arsenal and Liverpool.

A successful season in Europe for clubs like Newcastle is getting that far. Just like Celtic this year. No matter what happens now they have had a successful run in the UEFA cup. If a team surpasses expectations then they have been successful.

Admittedly they have not been consistently successful in Europe but apart from United who has?
