This is just an initial post from myself on my generic army selection (army list to follow)

My first base is (obviously) my troop choices. I prefer something with tactical flexibility.

Assuming I'm using Space Wolves, this is my Grey Hunters. They are good in general, and rather hard up close as Conflict proved to me. I was quite amazed to find my Grey Hunters squad of 10 took on and wiped out two squads of ten Blood Thirsters (at the same time!).

Combine this with a Blood Claws pack (w/ Rhino transport) for some up close and "friendly" fun and frollics.

Next comes my fire-support. Space Wolves lack some of the more heavy weaponry that other chapters have as standard, leaving them to more specialised units. Most people don't like taking Long-Fangs (SW devestator squad) because they're expensive and you only get 5 of them max. Personally, I think they're the dogs b*llocks. They have the ability to split their fire at two seperate targets and generally tear lumps out of enemy targets (again proving their worth - to me anyway - at Conflict). I am toying with the idea of adding armour heavy support also. Perhaps a vindicator to add close up fire support. I think a whirlwind might be over-kill. Perhaps a Land-Raider, although they are rather expensive and OH-SO-LARGE targets.

Next is some sort of fast-assault capability. Space Wolves are a bit spoiled for choice in some respects here:

    - the above mentioned Blood claws in their rhino, whilst not being a fast-assault choice, work quite well when used this way. lash the rhino up the table somewhere and discharge those young pups into the action asap.

    - some sort of fast assault option either being blood claws with bikes or jump packs (NOTE: it is one or the other, not both). Blood claws fast-assault packs work rather well in this role harrassing the enemy or taking advantage of opportune breakpoints.

    - I've not much experience with landspeeders, etc since 2nd ed. so I wont comment too heavily on them. I'd treat these as an anti-vehicle choice rather than a general "fast-assault" choice.

    Next, my HQ choices:
    - A venerable Dreadnought is rather nice and can either be used as an elite choice or a hq choice. As a hq they are quite survivable - having re-roll abilities - not to mention equipping them with some rather heavy weapons.

    - A wolf-priest is also a nice choice I think here. Good stats, with the options to "heal" wounded troops under certain conditions along with general "I am hard"-ness :D

    Finally, elites:
And this is where it's creative license.
    - I would try and field wolf-guard terminators if I had the points as perhaps a body guard to a HQ unit or something.

    - if i were fielding several vehicles (Rhinos' aside) I would consider taking an Iron-Priest to keep them running.

Note: This entire rant has been off the top of my head and is in no way my "definitive" answer to DoTC's above post

You mean blood letters? you cant get squads of blood thirsters (unfortunately :D).

Ok I wont give a definate points value either (because I aint got a codex nearby).

I tend to go for quite a direct approach, with alot of flexability.

My 1st choice is troops, since I usually have a Khorne commander I can use my Beserkers and my troop choices, as they are very powerful in close combat and have the survivability to get there, add in 2 plasma pistols and you have some decent weapons against space marines, and their 3 str 5 atacks when they charge make them very vicious in the 1st round of combat. Sometimes I will take a standard squad of marines tho, as you can hand them a flamer (great for the mass's) or a heavy weapon for any tanks you meet (however I rarely take one as it slows them down more than anything).

For heavy support I ALWAYS take in my 3 obliterators, the most flexable heavy weapon squad you could ask for, 3 heavy weapons of your choice each round and a 2+ armour save, perfect for almost any situation, and if their rushed they can take out a powerfist and power weapon for a hard hitting melee.

For elites I like my terminators, I really like my terminators, the autocannon gives me the choice of taking down light viechles , or drilling through basic infantry with ease, especially good against stronger foe, like space marines or necrons. I always equip all my other terminators with twin inked bolters, the re-roll is much more useful than that 1 shot with a diffrent weapon. For their close combat weapons I like my lightning claws, re-roll to wound and no armour save, brilliant for any strong target.

For my HQ I like taking a khorne exhaulted champion on a juggernaut (sp?) because the extra toughness and attacks leave him a hard foe indeed, add the mark of khorne and a plasma pistol and lightning claw and you have 7 strength 5 attacks with re-roll to wounds and no armour saves!!! However sometimes when I plan to use him against tanks or strong foe's a powerfist can do MASSIVE damage (7 strength 10 attacks, ouch).

As for fast attack im not a big fan of it, I recently got a squad of raptors but I havent painted them yet, which can be useful because if they win the combat on the round they charge the enemy must fall back with no leadership test (unles their immune) and get 3 dice followup, have a tendancy to wipe out squads in 1 go, but their insanely pricey and not that tough, good when they get into a nice situation.

Sorry ... meant Khorne Beserkers :D

My venerable Dreadnought took out another 6 of them in close combat - 3 in a row (two turns running).

I play Orks (Bad Moons, not that it matters, but it kinda justifies the units I have..).

HQ is a Warboss with ammo runt, attack squig and retinue of about 8 Nobs (most with big shootas,3 with power claws, and one with a heavily kustomised slugga)a dok and a mek with either megablasta or burna. It takes up nearly a third of the points cost, but gives a really hard core- Lethal in close combat (the no. of models means they usually make the size check and fight with twice their initiative. That's 6 for the nobs, 8 for the warboss!) and lots of firepower. They always hit something every turn

I have a battlewagon which usually transports the HQ around, especially if there's not much anti tank stuff around.

A mob of 30 slugga boyz is next. It takes a huge amount of firepower to whittle these guys down, and they can cause big casualties when they get close.

A mob of Grots always goes in front of the boyz for cannon fodder purposes, and to take the brunt of a charge (leaving the boyz to countercharge.Heheheheh...) although they've occasionally taken down a few enemies (Scouts, terminators, and on one occasion Captain Tycho...)

A squadron of 5 bikes, led by a Nob, provides some fast moving and hard hitting firepower (a total of 15 shots, each with a reroll to hit...) and against lightly armoured troops they're really nasty in close combat.

A Wartrak with a kustom megablasta zooms about the place and can shoot after moving a hefty 13 inches. Has been very annoying to opponents on occasion!

A looted Imperial Guard Basilisk with indirect fire is always at the very back. I've had this baby wipe out whole squads of Space wolves in one shot (although since then it's always been destroyed by space wolf scouts popping out of nowhere...)

A dreadnought with big shoota and rokkit launcha has proven dead handy. I usually advance it with the slugga boyz, as it either draws some fire from the troops or the large number of troops makes them forget about the dread. The dread once took down a bloodthirster (admittedly it died in the explosion caused by destroying the dread, but still...)

I also have a dozen Stormboyz. I usually get these to zoom over towards heavy weapon squads and tie them up in close combat, stopping my vehicles getting blown up. I haven't really found much other use for them.

Regarding tactics, I try to keep all the fast moving stuff on one side of the table and zoom them off to flank the enemy, which hopefully forces him to change his battle lines, and weakens them for when the rest of my forces hit them head on. The Basilisk tries to stay out of the way while taking huge chunks out of the army!

Ouch, sounds like quite an army. The splitting squads into five man jobbies is probably a good thing, casualties are hard to inflict on marines anyway, and you can deploy over a much larger area...

That army sound nasty. Wouldn't like to come up against that any time soon, makes me want to rethink my strategy or lack off. Thanks for the warning.

Hang on .. that army's illegal!

    7/8 blood claws(2 power fists)

You need 8 MINIMUM in a blood claws pack.

2 8man squads of blow claws with 2 fists

Illegal. Only allowed ONE Blood Claws pack in the entire army (Troop category)

    7/8 blood claws on BIKES!!!!!!!!

#i am pretty sure(just checked army builder-don't have the codex) that you can have as many blood claw pack as you like-with the usual limitations.

Hmmm. You can have (iirc) between 3-8 Blood Claws in a bike pack. But it's either a bike pack or a jump pack squad.

The codex gives no numbers of squads for Blood Claws Troop choices, therefore it means only 'A single' pack. Same applies to Long Fangs and characters (unless stated otherwise).

The Grey Hunters, for example, have a '0 or more' indication beside them whereas the Blood Claws don't.

Further - were the three assault bikes in a squad? Or seperate to each other? If so, then combined with the Blood Claws bike pack would have been 4 Fast Assault choices. Also illegal under standard scenarios.
