I'd say try a different brand of DVD as standalone players are less tolerant to different brands/make of DVDs than pc players.

Seems to be the most compatible ones are the ritek type of DVD media this is actually a type of dye that is used by certain manufacturers, it is a deep purply colour.
That said this is not set in stone and you may well find that a cheap make may well suit your specific player .
My advice would be to try different makes first then find out whether or not it is the media or the player itself. Some online sites let you buy trial packs of different media .
