What are your favourite apps? The ones which you just couldn't do without?

    Mine are:
    1) Goback - the app that has saved my arse so many times as to be worth far more than I paid for it. If you feck up your OS, apps or documents or tried out some sh!tty shareware piece of crap that's a pile of bonzibuddy crap, this baby will revert your drive to exactly the state it was in at a time in the past (not before it was installed though). (It's soooo sweet :D)

    2) Digiguide - this thing is it when it comes to television guides. More than 2 weeks listings in advance, listings from any channels from here or the UK available, popup reminders, and the ability to automatically start up your TV card when a fave program is on. As a result of this, I watch far too much telly.

    3) Mozilla - Browser suite. More secure than IE and far superior than NS4. Constantly updated with new features too.

    4) Gnucleus - Peer2Peer filesharing app without adware.

    5) Zonealarm - personal firewall. Stops loads of apps connecting to the net behind your back and puts your PC into stealth mode on the net.

Other good ones include DUmeter download rate monitor, NoFrillsTimer, GAIM universal instant messenger, MP3DirectCut MP3 editor.

    It is what it's.

I think we did this a while back, but all the same, mine have changed. I did have a quick look for it, but couldnt ind it.

The applications Pimpeh cant do without at this moment, in no particular order.
    • mIRC & No Name Script
Basically NNScript has made IRC so much handier, and prettier. IRC, well that one speaks for itself really.
    • AVG 6.0 Anti-Virus
Everyone needs an antivirus, and although it may not necessarily be a favourite, its a must. I chose this because it was highly recommended, and it's free.
    • Win DVD & DVD Region Killer / Xine (when it works)
My DVD player of choice, making those long quiet hours of work pass by with ease. The Region Killer software manipulates the region codes of the software program, I think. The Drive is Region free anyway. (after some Firmware changing it is anyway)
    • HLSW
For all my game browsing needs...
    • Alcohol 120%
CD Imaging/Virtual CDrom Drive/CD Burning. Its all here in one application. For when youre just not arsed carrying a bag of CD's everywhere. Does everything I need it to and more.

    Others that deserve honourable mentions
Winace - Zip Unzip says it all.
vim - for all your quick text editing needs, mostly used for html.
Winamp 3 - Because its better than Winamp 2.x ;)
DivX, XviD and other various codecs - Cant play mpegs without those codecs.
Freelancer - Game of the moment
Partition Magic - For squeezing that little bit extra out of a drive when you need it.
Dell Access Direct - For those speshul extra buttons on my laptop.

    [edited to add/fix links]

Win DVD 2000/DVD Genie - they are a must :)

E-Backup 1.42-Backs up my important emails, addresses, favourites and even my folders :)

AVG 6.0 - keeps away nasty viruses :p

AOL IM/DeadAIM - could i be without it? no :)

Winamp 2.81 - havent changed over to 3 yet , still with the classic

Another good one is....System Mechanic for keeping my system in tune :D

    • Winamp 3 - i only moved over from 2.81 yesterday, it's a bit more of a memory hog & the id3 tag editor has gone a bit crappy, but it's worth the upgrade for the plugins/skins.
    • Total Commander - Formerly windows commander. great for previewing text/video/images/audio & a truely essential replacement for windows explorer.
    • Getright - A godsend for dial up connections.
    • Winrar - Unpacks most of the popular archive types out there & is great for packing zip & rar files. (plugs nicely into windows commander too)
    • Nero/Clone cd/CDRwin/Daemon Tools - Can't decide which one is the most useful...

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,268 ✭✭✭hostyle

    • Nero / Daemon Tools / CDRwin - everything and its aunt for data backup and re-access
    • PowerArchiver, for all your compression / uncompression needs (being able to unrar, but not rar is my only gripe)
    • Phoenix, mozilla without the bloat
    • ENCspot - don't accept anything less than 192 Kb/s LAME rips
    • Activestate Perl, if other software isnt up to the job, write your own :)

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,840 ✭✭✭s8n

    Windows:

PuTTY - free telnet/SSH client for windows
MSN messenger 3.6 - because there's no damn way I'll use the recent versions
Opera 7 - excellent browser, using it with skins disabled. (the "windows" skin, actually, but same thing)
WebWasher - ad-filtering (and more) proxy server
Clipomatic - Enhanced clipboard - stores previous clipboard items, can be retrieved with ctrl-alt-v. Very useful for things like programming and site design.

    Beardy:

irssi - IRC client, beats the pants off BitchX. Weee!
Samba - Used to access files on the server, no important data stored on the workstation. Windows profile stored on the server too, it's great.
vim - Just like marmite. :)
mutt - great email application, fast and simple.
wget - downloading with anything else is just painful.

Other things that deserve a mention are Windows Media player, (6.4 only, using anything else makes my eyes want to shrivel up and crawl away) VNC, HiddenMenu (Er, kinda like the start menu except it doesn't make my hair stand on end from frustration) and plenty others, too many to list.
