Just a note to say I was very disappointed with the quality of Sky's coverage of the Albania game. All it was, was a "filler" leading up to the "main event" - England v. Turkey!! There was feck all analysis, just constant build up from the Stadium of Light. Compare this to RTE's usual coverage.... Hopefully The govt. will do something right for one with the new broadcasting legislation!!!

they already passed that legislation iirc
not sure when it kicks in, i was under the impression it would be retroactive, and negate fai's sell out of the irish people to sky, obviously not ...

    decent commentators

I never really rated Niall Quinn as a decent commentator. The game was at a "crucial" moment for the entire 90mins....

    JIm Beglin

    Frank Stapleton

    Nial Quinn

I know who i prefer to lsiten to :)

The legislation only applies to home internationals.
The Albanian FA are free to sell foreign broadcast rights to the highest bidder. Sky outbid (or got in before) RTE.

I am with Kdjac. I would much rather listen to Sky commentators than George Hamilton and Jim Beglin. In fact I would almost rather miss the match than listen to those two.

The coverage was A1. No problems with it at all although Niall Quinn is a muppet when he opens his mouth. I agree that the match as far as Sky was concerned was a support act to the English game but what else did we expect.

Samson is right. Sky getting the right to show the Albanian match has got nothing to do with the FAI selling them the rights to home internationals.

Anyway, I think RTE do a far better job than SKY do. Its really annoying hearing about England starting XI during an Ireland game.

I Agree , I'm not a big fan of SKY's international coverage of Ireland - As said before the England Team Line-Up being blasted out on that ticker tape was just annoying...

Also as said before Quinn on around 50 mins says "This is a crucial time for the lads" then... around full time "Crucial time for Ireland" etc.. He's a nice bloke but I'm not a big fan of his insight / commentary (maybe he'll improve).

But the 1 major thing I absolutely hate about SKY's Coverage is the English commentator saying " KIN .... SELL ... A"

    its not " KIN .... SELL ... A"

    its "KINS..ELLA"

I hate there mispronunciations at least RTE's commentators try to pronounce names as there meant to be ....

I think sky coverage is FAR BETTER than RTE's.

I thought Quinny wasnt too bad, and at least he didnt irritate my the way RTE's muppet show do.

I remember commentators used to pronounce Kevin Moran as Mirr-ran

And Paul McGrath and Mc Graah

    Clueless !!

I would prefer RTEs studio analysis with Dunphy, Giles or Brady but their commentary teams are awful.

As bad as Quinn and Stapleton are Jim Beglin is the most annoying person ever to commentate a match.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,286 ✭✭✭SprostonGreen

The worst ever is Jimmy "I love to pronounce foreign names" Ma gee.

    Hands down, he was dreadful.

Dunphy and O'Herilhy were so repetitive last night, ie, Clinton Morrison needs to partner Keane up front, that point was made several time.

And I dont recall them showing the group table at the end of the match.

Yer Quinn is abit of a muppet when it comes to commentary but overall i prefer Sky's tbh.

Pity they just used it as filler but tbh thats all it was with England playing Turkey. The ticket tape at the bottom i dont really find annoying at all.

Jimmy McGee was a great commentator, what did he ever do wrong. Its a pity he's too old, as he's a better commentator than Hamilton.

I was disappointed with the way Sky treated our game as a curtain raiser for England, but that natural, they are an English station.

Quinn was quite good at summarising, he had the inside info, being an explayer, and I agreed with most of what he said about our approach play. When a game is at 0-0, most moments are crucial, because letting in one goal could lose the game if both defences have been on top. So the comment about Quinn calling lots of moments crucial is stupid; they were crucial, or at least they felt just as crucial to me at the time as it seems they did to him.

In fairness to Sky, If it was RTE showing an england match followed by and Irish match I think it would be the exact same.

Where do ya reckon most of there viewers are based.

Personally I like Sky's build-up but I'd really like if BBC to cover the game if they could do it impartially.

p.s. RTE weren't prepared to pay a seemingly excessive price to the Albanian FA.

It does indirectly because now that Sky have our home games they'll naturally want to buy as many of our away games too since they've discovered there is a market for them.

Whilst sky are an English network, they DO aim at an Irish market, eg, Irish ads on Sky News, etc. Therefore the coverage of the Albania game should be geared towards the Irish viewers! RTE analysis was much more interesting and entertaining than "Wooden" Staunton!

I agree about Hamilton and Beglin... but at least Georgie never(!) ever (!?!) mispronounces a name!

They don't show those ads in England. They show different ads in England than they do here. In Ireland you see the Irish ads on sky you see the English ads on sky in England.

Your right about the analysis though. But I wouldn't exactly say that Liam Brady is much better at it for RTÉ.

only on Sky 1 and Sky News at the moment. they are however expanding this to Sky Sports 1 and 2

supposedly the albanians wanted 1/4 million for the game so sky just outbid Rte

no matter how terrible the covarage was (and it was terrible) or how irritating sky is (and it really really is pissy) nothing can take away form the pure lack of quality football being played.....

    Ah come on

" ALBANIA played some good football "

    :D
