Moblie Phone serial number

Below is an email I received regarding mobile phone serial numbers and their possible use. I decided that in light of all the mobile phone robberies with sometimes fatal consequences that it may be a good idea to post this. Spread the word to other people about it as well.
Wonder why 02, Vodafone, etc., have not let this one out of the bag...
wouldn't mean that they would lose profits would it? To check your
    mobile
phone's serial number, key in the following on your phone: star hash
    zero
    six hash *#06# .

A 15-digit code will appear on the screen. This number is unique to
    your
handset. Write it down and keep it somewhere safe. Should your phone
    get
stolen, you can phone your service provider and give them this code.
    They
will then be able to block your handset so even if the thief changes the
    Sim
card your phone will be totally useless.
You probably won't get your phone back, but at least you know that
    whoever
stole it can't use/sell it either. If everybody did this, there would
    be no
point in stealing mobile phones. Send this to as many people with
    mobiles
    as possible.

vodafone already do this dont they. The block the phones from working by blocking the imei number. Not sure if you change the imei number whether the phone will work or not.
