Use Hardware or Software Compression

I was looking at my desperate 56K modem settings and I noticed that I was using both software and hardware compression. It reccomends software over hardware and to use either but not both. Is this correct? Has anyone looked into this?

Yeah i saw this before. I play games mostly so i thought it might help my ping by turning software compression off but it didn;t do much. It has better compression than hardware compression so its better for downloading stuff.
