I was just browsing Amazon, listening to tracks off a CD that I was gonna get (off cdwow :D) when I noticed that it was available as a DVD-Audio disc as well.

So I was wondering was there much of a difference between the two formats? I'm talking along the lines of sound quality etc. rather than extras being available on the DVD format. Seems like it would be rather limiting to buy a disc and only be able to play it on a DVD player or computer.

The newest Frank Zappa Album was released on DVD-A format only. It comes in dts 5.1 surround sound which is pretty amazing sound, and sound is everything when it comes to FZ. Sadly DVD-As can only be played in DVD players, this includes a ps2. So if you have a DVD player with surround sound i reconmend you go for it. If you just have a DVD play hooked up to the tv then you won't get the full affect of a DVD-A, and it will sound ****e.

afaik DVD-A is far better but the only problem is if it has been recorded from Analogue or a digital medium that sample rate is higher than the 44k of cd's. Just like cd's that are "ddd" or "aad" etc. ie- recorded analogue, mixed analogue and mastered digitally (I could be slightly wrong with that process).

Basically I don't know! But in the future DVD-A will overtake cd's as it can bring about a much more accurate reflection of the music created by the artist. Afaik in fact there is more information held on a viny record than on a cd but this may not be the case with dvd.

Gordon your post makes no sense. why would a higher sample rate be a problem?

As far as the original question goes.. will it sound better?

Depends on the remastering process.. if they've just gone and converted current digital sources (used for CD) then any difference will be negligible, however if its a complete reproduced and remastered DVD-A (or SACD same applies) from the original analogue/digital tapes then the difference will be very noticeable if its a familiar album, Rolling Stones - Aftermath SACD is a prime example and Dark Side Of The Moon.

For the former (non completly remastered issues) the difference is very equipment dependent i.e. if you've a high-end DVD/SACD player, amp and speakers you'll notice the difference on stereo discs, but on lower-end equipment it mightn't be so obvious.

Also music isnt a 5.1 format so I tend to discount that as a current fad to get ppl interested in the emerging formats, see the current advertising for the SACD release of DSOTM, even if it does sound amazing :)...

Personally I can see SACD winning the current high-end audio battle as its backed by Sony and Philips and both are ploughing a lot of money into the format... Sony paid for the costs of remastering DSOTM, and EMI were previously dedicated to DVD-A only :)
