I was away for the weekend, so I haven't checked my mail since Friday night. In about 48 hours, I got 90 email messages.

    74 were f$%king SPAM

Time for a new email address (even though its a pain in the ass).

How much SPAM do you get a day?

I've had the email address for over 4 years now.... All it takes is one little slip for it to get out in the wild.

Not just that, but the quality of spam has gone down these days, you know, they dont even bother pretending to be real people anymore.
    I get spam from dgfjkyg@eri8236.com,
I mean WTF, what idiot's going to open that, <looks around> ........... oh. anyway...

I miss the days when Spam had heart, :D

I'm getting spam all of a sudden. Its only a little bit but what bothers me is that its coming to my "safe" address - the one I never sign up for things with and only give out to a few friends. I have no idea how they got this address but today it got its first Nigerian scam email.

on my main account, generally none- but occasionally 1 or 2.

thankfully, I have a domain or two that are MINE, with mail servers and web servers hanging off them... so I can just set up new mail accounts if and when needed.

oh god, on my oceanfree account i've had for 3 years, at least 100 a day, i've lost count really. i use

    www.mailwasher.net

it deletes the mail straight from the mail server before you download it, it gets the message headers, and lets you flick through it, to check or uncheck the mail you want deleted. and it automatically checks most of the spam based on ip blacklists maintained by spamcop and the like.

so you give the headers a quick scan, make sure one of your friends aren't ticked by accident (never happens), and you add each of your friends to your friend list, so overtime it gets better and better too.

these guys deserve some award or something. i would have had to change e-mail addresses ages ago if it weren't for mailwasher.

oh and another cool feature is if you wish, you bounce the mail back, and make ur account look like it has been de-activated to the would-be spamming scum.

oh, and if you can't tell if a message is spam just from the header and to and from fields and the date, then you can just click space on the message, and it shows you the body, but it doesn't render HTML code, or pictures or execute anything, so you'll never execute a virus, and it filters out images from the mail too so you can quickly just tell whether it's spam or an e-mail.

I know this probably isn't the solution but it makes me smile a little.

I take the offending senders address and sign it up to as many seriously dodgy sites as I can find.

You know the ones that have the "enter email address here to receive spam blah blah"

You just know within hours that address is going to be all over the net:p :p:p:p

had my hotmail account for 3 yrs now and i don't get much spam at all.

the thing with most spammers is they send their spam systematicaly to thousands of (to them) real or "imaginary"/ generated email addresses. the catch is when ppl click on the link at the bottom of the page(in very small text) that leads you to believe you are removing your email address from their database when infact, you're just confirming that (to them) you exist and your account is active... i.e. they send you spam.

so in future don't bother opening them, just block the address and delete it.

unless ofcourse you actually did sign up for the secrets to increasing your penis size!

    :p

Oh I use mailwasher... I've been a registered user for a long time now. The new URL is http://www.firetrust.com, by the way - Mailwasher 3.0 is out. The spam never reaches my PC, but I still have to quickly screen it in case something important gets blacklisted by mistake.

I (like everyone here I suppose) have an email addy just for signing up for stuff . .. that email used to get hammered with spam coming from one company (er .. adult in nature, and NO I didnt sign up for it) ... but it had an unsubscribe jobby on the bottom ... so I thought the email address is already practically useless .. so I unsubscribed and .... no more spam from them!! I still cant believe it .. that email address only gets ~ 2 spams a week now ... :D
My personal addy is spam free from 3 - 4 years ... no anti spam software!

I get over 20 spam mail's a day and the obligatory 419's (Plus a few more sites that are procmailed to /dev/null).

They don't even bother me at all. I use a command line mail client (mutt) and a few clicks of the 'd' key and it's gone. Also, when you add up all the mail from lists, postmaster, admin, etc it ends up just being a drop in the ocean.
