I've been looking into this area today..

From what I can tell it looks like Playstation online will be rolled out in May in the UK and some other parts of Europe. Trials have been underway recently in the UK.

SOCOM Navy Seals will be the flagship game which is being released to coincide with the network adaptor, this article (from Sony Ireland) was published last week:

    Publisher: SCEE
    Developer: Zipper Interactive
    Release date: May 2003
The game that will launch the Network Adaptor for PS2 in Europe is effectively two distinct games in one. The multiplayer game is played online only, via the Network Adaptor. The single-player game is thankfully played via the common-or-garden PS2 that most of us have already. Considering the tardiness of the Broadband- wagon in Ireland, it's just as well. In this, the first of our SOCOM previews, we focus purely on the suspense filled action of the superb single-player game.

Other games include TimeSplitters 2 and Tony Hawks Pro Scating 4..

There is also a user forum for PS network gaming, see this discussion for a good primer on what's involved (diagrams)::

The Network adaptor is designed to be used to connect to a central server, not for "unofficial" WAN gaming.
You need to run a vpn tunnel to play against your mates.

Here is how you would set up TimeSplitters 2 for internet gaming:

hmm I`ve been playing the PSX online using ePSXe emulator and playing Winning Eleven 2002(ISS PES)

Much easier, pings of up to 300 are playable as well
