I have a 3D Prophet II MX. I have the Core Clock Frequency at 175MHz and Memory Clock Frequency at 183MHz, both default setting. What can I put these up to without doing damage to the card. I dont plan to add a fan or better heatsink to it or anything. How do I check if the card isn't able to maintain higher frequencies without waiting for a cloud of smoke.

Theres no golden rule. You keep pushing it till you get artifacts, or sparkles in the display. This usually happens before it goes puff. If you push it too far the sparkles, artifacts may be permanent though. Why overclock a GF2MX though? You'll only see the difference in benchmarking. Most games won't know the difference. Sell it and buy a decent card.

In that case overclock its brains out till it can't take any more. Personally I never found the effort to be worth it.

Same here, don't believe in graphics card overclocking.

On my Elsa Gladiac MX I got the Ram Clock over 210 with no problems.

I had a big fan blowing at it and it had some home-made heatsinks.

What difference did it make to your gaming?

Not a whole lot, a few (8-12) extra FPS in quake3 though.

The problem was I was using a 333mhz cpu, so it was really the bottleneck.

    It was fun anyway.

Overclocking your graphics card can save you money !!

I have a Creative Geforce4 Ti4200 64mb with a Thermal Take Cooler and ram heat sinks.

The cooler is made from copper and has and uprated fan as opposed to the original metal covered plastic cooler and fan. The ram heatsinks are aluminium. This kit is designed for the Ti Series Geforce 4's.

The Card itself cost €180 and the cooler kit cost just over €20.

    The default setting's are core=250 & ram=500

    I can operate the card (stable) @ core=305 & ram=610

Which is above the €275-€300 Ti 4400 and nearly up with the previously top of the range Ti4600n costing nearly €400.

True but if you damage the card, which is a possibility, it will cost you money.
