All you have to do is remember the phrase "Ich komme aus Irlande", and you're sorted (you don't want to be mistaken for somebody from Britain, do you?). All the hostel owners know "VISA, Mastercard, ja".

Apparently there's talks on at the moment with MCD to get them into Ireland.
