Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

dark spots on skin

I have several very prominent dark brown spots on my scalp, particularly around my hairline. They're usually not a problem, as I can just cover them with my hair, but I'm coming to realise that I'm not going to have hair forever;) (I'm 19 and my hairline is already noticeably receding - my dad was pretty bald aged 20.)

I first noticed them when I was around 14. I'm not sure what they are exactly - they could be due to a number of things:

    - Latent birthmarks (do such things exist?)
    - Allergy to bleach (I bleached my hair in Irish college when I was 14)
    - Sun Exposure (I have very fair skin and fine hair, which I usually cut short. So in the summertime my scalp was always exposed to the sun, and it often got heavily sunburnt - unlike the rest of my face which I lathered with SPF 30 cream.)

I am very self-conscious about them and if at all possible I would like to get rid of em. I have read up a bit and discovered "Skin lightening" products such as kojic acid and hydroquinone. I'd consider using them but I have heard of potentially awful side effects - particularly hydroquinone which some say increases risk of skin cancer. Needless to say if I do decide to use anything like that I'd consult a doctor.

Has anyone any experience of anything like this? Your advice would be very much appreciated.

If you first noticed them after you first bleached your hair it could be chemical burning caused by an Allergic reation to the Hydrogen Peroxide in the bleach.Skin lightening products are if i recall correctly contain the same base chemicals in a so you could make the problem worse, not to mention seriously fu<k up your scalp.I would definately advise against this.

Does the area affected change either in size or colour? If it does then it could be worth getting a doctor to take a look just to make sure it is nothing malignant, especially if it caused by exposure to the sun.

As a general guide how big are the spots?

eh i have little white patches on my joints - elbows, knees and ankles.
    however, i also have them in.....cough....other places:eek:

but i dont really care, with me its just a lack of pigment or something. but i can see how it would be worse for u with them right on your noggin.

sorry, no real advice here except see you GP asap.

They vary from about .1 mm in diameter to .5-.6mm (rough estimates). They also vary in colour from very light pinkish marks (barely noticeable) to quite a dark reddish brown. There is no raising of the skin, which is a good sign.

I think they may be becoming darker with age, which leads me to believe that they might be congenital marks/freckles which have been aggravated by sun exposure. But again that's a total guess. I've had my aunt look at them (she's not a doctor but an experienced nurse) and she wasn't too worried. I do plan on getting some expert opinion though.
