Just heard that as of today, Boomerang (603) will no longer be free to air.

Haven't had time to check yet, though.

Pity - it is a good channel.

Now that BBC is going to be free on FTA, BSkyB have decided to make the FTA package less attractive to potential churn, have they not? Whats next? Performance?, TCM?,Chart Show TV?. CNN?.
Although I didn't think Ted Turner would accept a bribe from BSkyB. (allegedly)

Yea, it seems Sky are being extra sneaky! I'd imagine there are many unhappy and annoyed viewers now...

    A sad day indeed.
Boomerang was one of the most watched channels in our house.
    Not any more, alas.

TCM, CartoonNetwork, Boomerang and CNN are all Turner.

    Warner taken by Time
    Time-Warner take over Turner

AOL due to entierly ficticious paper value takes over Time-Warner.

I blame AOL. And US Accounting practices. If "proper" value based on real money and earning rather than dotcom bubble shares had been used then AOL could NEVER have taken over.

Boycott AOL. No-one needs an AOL sub anyway, often "real" ISPs are better and cheaper. At end of day all you want form ISP is a connection, not all the AOL drivel.

No more recording Pink Panther on PC Hard disk for later...

One of the best free channels gone...

Sky claim it was Turner's decision. Hmm?
Same as RTEs "free carriage" was RTE's (an incentive to hard to resist that cheats the Irish TV licence payer).

    Sob sob.. no more Dangermouse...

Perhaps this is for the best
    - when BBC go FTA then there will be a lot less reasons to use SKY..

It is soooo annoying using a SKY DigiBox compared to most FTA boxes. Little things like having to type in all 3 digits when all you want to do is press that little button that flicks back to the last channe. And not being able to sort or hide all those channels you don't want to buy, ( especially ones like Fox and Bloomberg which are both FTA on Hotbird )

    My Email

    Dear Sir
Since I watch Boomerang on a FTA decoder which does not have a decoder or card slot and as I'll probably get rid of the SKY box when BBC move to another provider, your advertisers have lost another customer. As I am in my thirties I have absolutely no interest in the other cartoon channels. I also have little interest in a subscription satellite system which provides fewer and fewer channels.

    The Reply

Thanks very much for your email. In order to carry on providing viewers with the best classic animation that Boomerang provides, we have taken the decision to include Boomerang as part of a pay-TV package; this is in line with Boomerang's sister channels, Cartoon Network and CNX. The move allows us to market Boomerang as part of Sky's Family Pack of channels and offer viewers added value through interactivity, competitions and other viewer benefits.

Sky's Family Pack offers outstanding value with over 80 entertainment, news, documentary, kids, sports, music and other specialist channels.

    Yours sincerely,

    Nick Hart

Hmm.. conspiracy theory would say that SKY are trying to take as many channels off FTA to stop people leaving when BBC jump ship... Though since the simplist explanation is usually the correct one - Turner etc just want to squeeze a few euros off the punters..

I did not bother ask what the sub was
Lots of Italian channels are FTA. Excluding the big 6 terresterial channels and another 10 or so News / OpenUni channels there are another 15 producing their own content like TG4 - all paid for by normal Ad's.

AFAIK Turner own the copyrights to a lot of the stuff they show on certain channels so have very low overheads.

Apart from the cost, the other major promlem with Sky's so called "Family" pack is that it contains channels that no Christian family (and, I suspect, families of most other religious persuasions, as well) would feel happy about allowing into their homes.
