    Right Lads,

I have spent the day wiring and rewiring my house.
I have always connected to the net at around 51.x kb/s on one line and 49.2 on the other. I was never too bothered about this as they are fairly similar speeds and about a good as I could expect from a 56k modem.

However, during the rewiring today i had occasion to rewire one of the lines. All i did was change the socket and change around the pairs (not intensionally). When I went to connect to the net i realised that i had a 38.6 k connection. Being curious I tried the other untouched line, it was still at 51 k.

So my advice to all of you with shoddy 56k connections is -

    1. Rewire your socket in various configurations
    2. Change the cable (as it appeared to be a factor in a previous episode i had)
    3. Be very fussy when making the contacts inside the box.

I'll post an update when i get the 38.6 k line bact up to normal speeds.

Are you literally taking the socket off the wall and rewiring it?

I connect at about 31.2 here at home and I'd be interested in improving it if the problem was just the wiring in the wall!

    49.2!!!

Ladys and Gentlemen - I have THE answer (scroll to end if you're in a hurry)

The traditional irish phone is wired on a 3 wire system. Two for the voice circut one for the bell. (the really old systems used 6 wires but let forget that). Modern (15-20 years?) phones need only 2 wires as the bell is internally decoupled.

To regain my former connection I simply removed the third (bell) wire from the master socket (M box) (first socket coming into you're house) - Took 1.5 seconds with a screwdriver.
I was very careful not to touch the other wires as this would contaminate my experiment. see assci art below (i failed pass junior cert. art so forgive me)

Okay - pin 1, 3 and 4,6 you need - the others 2, 5 you don't (shouldn't) so disconnect them. You can always reconnect them if necessary.

NOTE - It may NOT be necessary to do this at the MASTER box.

I have not tried (i am going to bed...) but it may be possible to simply remove the the TOP RIGHT (market 2 on my diagram)
wire from the slave box that your pc connects to. see below

i found cleaning the contacts at the main box with sandpaper and soldering them on made a nice connection. Bit overkill I guess, but the mother kept hitting the dam thing with the hoover :(
