    Conor,
Howryah, whats the story with TiNet a/cs?
With a 28.8 modem I get an average ping of 250 and Packet loss of
15/20%! Is this problem related to the servers dificulties or is it different
    altogether?
Cos with an indigo a/c ping=180 average and no Packet Loss!
Just wondering, and letting you know...

    Mickah

This is what I was also thinking.

Tinet's dialup structure seems to not be as good as indigos. But that didn't show a big difference on the quake.ie servers cause the indigo to tinet connection wasn't so good. It was going through the INEX (Irish Nuetral Internet Exchange or soemthing similar). But a few weeks ago indigo got a straight connect into a more central location inside tinet, probably cause they are now owned by TE, or maybe they were just smart.

So what's different between tinet's and indigo's dialup structure? not sure, probably one is cheaper.

Only prob with indigo is it doesnt have a decent connect to Britain or Europe, right?

Fav its true, I use both indigo and tinet, don`t ask, and when I play with my tinet account I get a better ping on uk servers then irish ones????wot up with that then??
but then I connect to indigo and I get a ping of under 150, which is sometimes better then lpb on quake.ie....wot up with that????as lpb I can get a better connect to barrysworld the quake.ie servers, thanks overlord...
now thats freaky...and on idigo u get a crap ping in the uk..400+ 300 if your lucky..
btw I use a 56k flex, and connect to tinet at mostly 38k or 42k..and 33.6k to indigo, I had 28k the other nite and still had a cool ping...

    hmmm interesting...

Yup all that is true and here is why.
At the moment Indigo have a direct connection to TiNet from the
same location as their Dublin POP. Since the link has hardly any
traffic on it the latency is real low, hence good pings to quake.ie
servers in Dublin via Indigo. TiNet dialup is lousy at the moment
to the quake.ie servers because our link from our Dublin POP to
the quake.ie servers is heavily congested (hence the talk about upgrading
    it recently).
Okay now for the UK servers, we have a largely uncongested link to BT in the
UK, hence the cool pings to UK servers via TiNet. Indigo don't hecne the
lousy ping times to UK servers via Indigo.
Hopefully this will all be sorted in the near future and dialup over TiNet
will be cool to all quake.ie servers.

    Conor.

: What about a faq proxy running on the quake.ie box.
: This would really help the Indigo based hibs as we could
: connect to that proxy and force our packets to go through the
: Tinet BT link. Result: improved pings to the UK servers.
: Timely considering the Ire v wales game coming up...

John already thought of this and kindly supplied a
handy way for me to start a proxy on the
    kali.quake.ie server.

Theres one running now on kali.quake.ie:27501 so try
it out for all your connection needs.

Now if only I could find a way to shut the damn thing
down again. Conor - im logging in through the IQCL
account and started it up using the line in the
startproxy file, but as for shutting it down its
not showing up under my ps command. Help out
the clueless unix newbie will ya? I assume its
running under a different account or security
    restricted or something.

Yeah I had it running under my UID, I have swapped it over to
the IQCL UID. Apologies to anyone that was bumped.

Kewl, ta for the info. I suspected that this may be the case.
I have a request though to add to your overburdened workload,
sorry but it's a good idea I think:

I know this is a bit naughty considering that Indigo users
get to use the superior connection speed of a rival ISP but
, well, call me naughty then :)

We could always just put it up for the hibs games if traffic
would be a problem but I doubt it would as few HPB Irish players
play on the English servers anyway.

Watcha think? (apart from " Oh No More Work!")

ps: Once again the offer of help is there is you need it.
