"New fiber optic network to pave the way for faster internet access and more jobs"

Just the headline of some big thing I got in the mail today about a Fiber Optic Back Bone being installed over the next year though out city and Co. Compeletion May 04'

Says once that its installed.. companies can plug into it and offer the service though whatever media they wish.. Cable, wireless, DSL. So it wont be an eircom monopoly.. Broad Band will be cheaper as several companies will avail from it, and need not use eircoms lines.

    Great news or what!!!

Its got all this wierd stuff on the leavelet about..

Help to EsatBT to launch DSL services in Thurles limerck and Tralee :/ . It also says something about the ESB Telecoms recently launched the first national dfark fibre network in ireland what ever the hell that is :/

Yes I know that, but like it says companies can access this and use it to provide DSL and the likes to your door. Because of competition it will be much cheaper and much more affordable by 2004.

but the thing that is making dsl ect so expensive is the cost of the "Last Mile" there is loads of fiber in Ireland and its cheap too they are just getting screwed from eircom

Yes, for example, Dublin has a plethora of fibre from competing companies but, because Eircom control the last mile, it is only comparatively recently that DSL has been released and at high prices. The existance of fibre in Dublin did not lead to competing DSL providers.

One wonders, then, what the benefits to the home user would be from extra fibre in Limerick if they are stuck on the end of a wire owned by Eircom.

BTW, these new RADSL offerings by Via and Esat are not due to competition but rather due to a new wholesale introduced by Eircom.

What exactly is "the last mile"?

But Surely companies like chorus/ntl and new companies set up can tap into the fiber optics and use wireless or cable to run it into our homes.. avoiding the eircom lines?

It's a telco term meaning the wire between the exchange and your house. Often it's a lot more than a mile, of course. More recently, it has come to mean the last bit of infrastructure, wireless, cable or otherwise, that connects your house to the some sort of network.

The wired infrstructure used by Chorus and NTL are generally not capable of carrying two way broadband signals so no. As far as wireless is concerned, yes, cheap backhaul will make it cheaper to provide wireless solutions, but it is only part of the picture.

Look, there is value to what is being done here. Sure, the business model isn't clear and there are lots of kinks to iron out but if you were to ask the likes of IBB, LEAP or IrishWISP what the biggest impediment to them locating in the regions, one of the biggest ones is the cost of backhaul/backbone connectivity. Another of course is marketing cost to have people sign up. This network COULD make both far more painless and it is a step forward.
Quit being so negative about it. At least offer a balanced view if you are going to comment.

    iwb,
I was about to add the same comments. One reason for Esat rolling out DSL to only 40 of eircoms 1100 exchanges is the fact that they have no backhaul solution out of the exchange. The Limerick MAN will connect directly to the eircom exchanges in Limerick as well as ESBT's and Aurora's national rings so that a carrier can access these last mile copper pairs without requiring a backhaul from them.
There are other technologies like FSO and PON's which may effentually offer high quality DSL by way of extending the fibre backhaul beyond the local exchanges.
