Don't know if this belongs here or what but I just stumbled across it. Look at the connection speeds for the various colleges and then the connection to the General internet. Wonder if i could get a 600 gig connection for the house?

I'm on the backbone in UCC and over the summer the download speeds are fantastic.
My record is getting an ISO at an average speed of 1.1 meg a second.

They're only slightly different!! Friend of mine in DCU told me that its really restrictive over there. You're lucky even to get hotmail. And he's doing comp sci.

Iv gotten 10 gigs at 1.4 megs/sec between WIT and a machine on Internet backbone.

Both machines were fast wth plenty of RAM but it was during regular college hours.

We have 34 megs with 10 or 12 reserved for Inter IT trafic.

Alot of colleges restrict Hotmail (including us) coz it sucks huge amounts of bandwith....

Rightly so. It can safely assumed that the average Hotmail user is, shall we say, "uninitiated". In NUI,G in any computer lab you see the great unwashed streaming large videos from their Hotmail accounts, big attachments and links to porn.

    They're a pox upon humanity.

nice. I'm only on a 10 mbit conn though.

Iv an account on a box with 1200 GB of IDE RAID and i was working with a 600gb Compaq SAN for a while not so long ago ;)

The comp soc machines here have just short of 300 GB between em (nothin compared to some of the other soc's though, we gor the runt of the E450 litter :( )

The IT's suffer a bit of a bottle neck coz it all goes through Tallaght. There have been a few times the connection has gone and the reason give was the router going on fire.....

Could ya imagine connections like these to your home.... I live next door to a major Eircom exchange, i wonder if i just ran a bit of cable they'd plug me in.... probably not :p

Out of interest, which Compsoc is this? In NUI,G we have around 120gb at the moment but are upgrading soon. It's making me feel emasculated... :)

are these E450's that Sun donated?
I heard something about that. There's nothing like that here in UCC - the CompSoc used have about 5 pcs but then the physics dept flooded the room they were in and fried them!

    WIT (http://snet.wit.ie )

We have 5 or 6 machines with just under 300GB spred between them (most of the storage is in 2 machines)

We are under staffed atm so our web site is ****e but the shell is failry active

The SAN belongs to a research group in WIT (http://www.tssg.org) They have some very sweet hardware.

Yeah, i knew Redbrick were getting one (DCU) and then got a call from a Sun reseller and he filled me in on the info

The had a few refurbished ones to give out of various specs, i should have lied more about the size of the soc and what we proosed to do with it would have got a better spec maybe

I said it to a guy from minds (Maynooth) at the time and they contaced the same guy and got one (better then ours bastards!!) as well

Its an E450 with 2 X Ultra Sparc II 333 CPUs, about 350 megs of ram, an external SCSI enclouser (6 disks and space for 4 cold spares). The box itsself only has a backplane for 4 disks (so thats 10 total) They gave us varoius disks (4 gb to 18 gb) that make up about 85-90 GB. It runs Solaris 9 ( that sun posted me out of the blue about a month or 2 ago) and we can mail an address anytime for tech support

Some of the other socs got 4 X CPU and 20 X harddisks and some got tape drives as well.

They are work horses, i installed Linux on it a while back to see if i could and it ran fine. Might throw a BSD on it for a look this summer before i gear it up for september.

Redbrick have a failry serious amout of hardware/storage they just got a Dell Poweredge server, but with 1500+ members they need it.
