We have been having some problems on RTE and 3 Rock. The guys are working on it.

IP Link? The new website will be going up this week sometime - there will be pricing on that. As of yesterday - as a basic guideline - all business clients will be put onto VL (the technology) as a default if possible. It used to be 2Meg and up, but as we are managing to get better pricing for the kits - we are able to pass that over to lower costing packages.

Any chance of a cheapy res version? Those pings are insane.

And could you ping clarity.jolt.co.uk out of interest?

    Hi there :D

I've just read this thread from the first post to the last one.
Now, I'm a bit confused and I'd like you to help me :)

What provider would you choose for gaming?
Reading your post I noticed that Eircom and BT offer the best pings (I can't effort a business line :( ).

Could you please ping these 2 servers for me 194.177.124.197:27018 and 62.93.205.97:27015 ?

How long does it normally take to get "the kit" (modem and connection) at home?

Thank you very much in advance.

    Flavio

The first server, is that in the States or somewhere far?

    Wow

Thank you very much indeed, that was quick.
Well the first server is in Italy, the second one in Germany [they are both CS servers].

Ando, can I ask you how long it took you to get you DSL working? Are you happy with your Eircom's IStream starter package?
Would you reccomend that or you think that IOL is better?

Sorry, but I've just moved to Ireland and I'm trying to understand what the best DSL for gaming is.

    Cheers,

    :p

I dont know - but I think a long term goal is to try and move all the business over to VL - and depending on what kind of pricing we get from our suppliers - to move home users to a similar solution. This is only what I guess - and dont hold me liable if it doesnt happen - it is just the logical step.

took just over a month, I was on Netsource Dsl before, but they are crap for gaming. I've had Eircom's dsl since last Friday and its been excellent all the time, even at peak times. I dont have any experiance of IOL's package so I cant comment on that one ;)

Ill second that, Netsource sux for gaming, jolt.co.uk = 100-200 bouncing ping every evening and most of the weekend.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 696 ✭✭✭Kevok

Thanks Chaz. Those pings look incredible. Hopefully you guys will be able to work something out. (but to keep from being dissapointed I'll assume it'll never happen).

Actually now that I think about it, I did get similar pings originally when I had the old USB modem and was on the Sandyford tower. Pings were great with that thing, but the packet loss was pretty high and cancelled out the great ping.

I've got another couple of questions. :D

    1. Do you know if it is possible to have 2 PCs connected at the same time using either IOL or Eircom ?

    2. Can anybody who has got IOL DSL 512/128 try to ping these servers plz? 194.177.124.197:27018 and 62.93.205.97:27015

    Thanks lads :p

Well Kevok - seems somethings might go different to the norm.

I have spoken to our management and we want to test the waters with a new product.

1 Meg Gaming / High End Home Package (Exclusive to home users)
    Cost: €100 per month
Bandwidth - 1 Meg 1:8 in the day - with it moving over to 1 Meg 1:4 in the evenings.

Current clients such as yourself will be first in line to merge over to the new product if there is interest.

For new users the install fee will be the same as the current fee of €149. For existing clients - I believe that there will be no fee to upgrade the equipment. This is subject to renewal of a 1 year contract.

Who can so no to these kind of pings:

    C:\Documents and Settings\charl_t>ping www.google.com

Pinging www.google.akadns.net [216.239.59.99] with 32 bytes of data:

    Reply from 216.239.59.99: bytes=32 time=15ms TTL=54
    Reply from 216.239.59.99: bytes=32 time<10ms TTL=54
    Reply from 216.239.59.99: bytes=32 time<10ms TTL=54
    Reply from 216.239.59.99: bytes=32 time<10ms TTL=54

    Ping statistics for 216.239.59.99:
    Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 4, Lost = 0 (0% loss),
Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:
    Minimum = 0ms, Maximum = 15ms, Average = 3ms

The product is available off 3 Rock, Tallaght and Guinness - with distance basically being no factor - and the equipment being NEAR LOS in most cases.

PM Me or mail me - charl@irishbroadband.ie - those that are interested.

Oh - and watch this space - soon a few more 'services' to be added if plans go well.

Share a single user dsl with WinXP or similar OS with a hub/switch. Or buy an ethernet dsl router. Eircom etc charge extra for a 4 user solution - so dont assume they will help you do this. Lots of info out there on doing this. Check out the other threads for good routers.

Its different at different times of the day/different days - you would need to get a ping at a time when you would be using it most. Even Netsource is good during the day ;)

Sent my cancellation in today for Netsource.

    I've had enough.

After trying UTV and Netsource - and after spending hundreds of euros (450 so far) - and many months of hassle - I think I'll just give in and go with the Rat.

Very low cap and expensive - but at least its a decent service.
I had a freind let me try his account in my modem - hey - 30ms pings - I can play bf1942 again!

Spoke to some dude (he claimed he was some head of dsl or something) in Eircom stand at RDS show today - I told him that the other dsl providors were all blaiming Eircom - he got anoyed and said if they[non-eircom dsl providors] actually paid them[Eircom] what they owe, then they[Eircom dsl people] would give them a better service.

    hmmm.

Cause the pings get doubled without any benefits in this case. This might not matter to people who're not into gaming, though it's a huge thing for people who are.

Pings of 400 with 1mb eircom adsl. Just looks like something has gone temporarily wrong. Pings should stay around 60-70 at all times. Could be anything temporary.

FYI: If you have copper runs of 200m in you building I would contact the the installers. The specifications limit the length of a cable run to 90m, (This is for structured cable, ie between you wall socket and the patch panel in the comms room.) you are then allowed 10m for patch leads. If either of these lengths are exceeded the CAT5 or 5E tester will fail the line. Installers usually only test the structured part.
